Thriving in a Long-Distance Relationship ? Complementarian Loners

Always toward absent lovers love?s tide stronger flows.

I found this article at The Frisky and thought I?d offer a different version (since we all know how much I like pointing out what?s wrong and correcting it).

1.?????? Establish ground rules from the start.

Yes, do this if you?re already in a relationship and will be having a period of separation, but otherwise, from the start might be too artificial. Furthermore, ?[o]penly discuss topics such as whether to remain monogamous? is poison. You cannot maintain a ?strong bond? if you are off screwing other people. This is just the dumbest thing anyone could do if one is expecting a strong bond to survive over physical distance. Ground rules are good though, and probably necessary to prevent later conflict or emotional distance, once you have established exclusivity. Exclusivity of ?seeing? other people should not be assumed until stated, but this does not mean it is OK to screw around if there is a hope for the relationship to grow into something exclusive.

2.?????? Discuss a mutually agreed-upon end goal for your relationship.

Again ?exclusivity? or lack thereof is an advised topic of discussion. If one is planning relocation, one needs to be certain that this isn?t just some loose binding ?maybe? shit! As for ?end goals?, that also depends. If the ?end goal? in having relationships isn?t total commitment, why on earth would you put yourself through a long-distance relationship? What is the connection based on? Again, discussing ?end goals? at the beginning is artificial beyond figuring out if the two of you are of like mind (i.e. marriage-minded or fling-minded). With an attitude of ?maybe? the odds of maintaining a meaningful relationship with long periods of separation are slim.

The reason I put ?end goal(s)? in quotation marks is because the very idea of a relationship having such a thing is questionable in the first place, not to mention crass. Thinking of it this way, rather than as a shared journey, is setting yourself up for much discontent. An objective, but not the ?end goal,? is finding a mate to for the journey. The journey of life as we know it ends with death; the only thing you have is the road on which you travel.

3.?????? Avoid excessive communicating.

Define ?excessive?. Scheduling only a one-hour phone call per week as suggested here leads me to ask, are you really so boring that this is the only way you?ll have ?exciting updates? to share? A relationship is not about ?exciting updates? but about heart connection, meeting the emotional needs of the other, supporting and helping one another. Talking about the routine events of life and personal opinions is the means of getting to know each other. This takes more than one-hour per week. While there may be no need to text every five minutes through a work day, frequent communication does maintain a connection and, if you do get bored, it may be time to re-think the whole thing. If daily chats grow stale, imagine living together for twenty years! Avoiding communication in order to stimulate excitement artificially does not speak to a lasting bond. Typically in a budding relationship, there is a lot of communication because there is attraction and this is the means to get to know the personality of each other. The template (or ?rules?) of communication (what can be talked about, openness, honesty, not overreacting), are established early in a relationship and are difficult to change later.

Less-frequent communication will not only keep you from growing dependent on each other, but also will provide you both with the freedom to grow independently and have your own lives and hobbies.

A good relationship includes interdependence but not co-dependence. Even an hour each day should not prevent one from having a life outside the relationship. Keeping up communication does not negate hobbies. Why the emphasis on independence anyway? What about growing together? Some things can be learned better through relating than by working alone. I would say it?s pretty difficult to over-do this aspect in a LDR and that daily communication is pretty well essential unless there?s some real reason not to. Deliberately avoiding it would be counter-productive. If you both want to touch base daily, why shouldn?t you?

4.?????? Alternate visits on each other?s turfs.

I do not see the necessity of this either, although it?s not in and of itself a bad idea. There are no hard and fast rules to this and each person must be flexible enough to accept the circumstances. This isn?t about fairness or being equal, it?s about the love (and respect) you have for each other. If there is a genuine connection and genuine love, it won?t much matter where you meet periodically, so long as wherever it is, you can do things you both enjoy. This smacks of score-keeping to me as well. The idea that one person doing most of the travelling might ?not only create an unhealthy and unbalanced relationship, but [...] also lead to a partner?s resentment? is just silly and petty. Do whatever is most convenient and don?t worry about it. The financial cost should be shared and the which has more flexibility and time to travel should be taken into account.

5.?????? Raise your trust level significantly.

YES to this, however, the advice to stuff your feeling of jealousy is not good. To do this misses the opportunity to build trust. Trust does not come out of nowhere. There is a certain amount of choice involved here just as love is also a choice, but one can easily misplace trust. The key is to be honest about those not-so-great feelings (which are more or less inevitable) and not to accuse each other of things you have concocted in your imagination. Conversely, you have to be able to accept your partner?s feelings and not get defensive or tell him he shouldn?t feel that way (a mistake men often make with women). Without open, honest discussion, trust will not build and destructive feelings will fester. Don?t be afraid of difficult conversations to determine if such things can be discussed without emotional escalation and accusations. These conversations increase the trust or could reveal that trust is not warranted. Also there will be occasions of insecurity where trust will be tested. The solution is frank honest conversations and the level of trust will increase on the next upswing. Life is not a constant, but there should be a foundation to avoid falling into an abyss during the normal emotional connection cycle of a relationship.

6.?????? Keep it sexy and spicy.

The advice here is weird (watching the same movie at the same time is ?sexy and spicy??) so I?ll bypass the obvious (?make the most of your physical time together?, although this seems to imply ?shag loads? and not much else) and suggest that flirting is always possible. Act ?as if? and get the imagination going as a way to discover more about each other. Have video chats in the nude that aren?t necessarily sexual. This engenders comfort and trust once you get over the initial apprehension and strangeness. This is a culture that reserves full nudity for the sexual arena and normal natural nudity is uncomfortable for most people, so they don?t even consider it. (It is difficult to be dishonest during a nude non-sexual conversation). We?ve all heard it said that the most important sexual organ is the brain, and this is certainly true. We should express our desire for each other and allow it to build over the distance.

7.?????? Live your life!

This is probably the one part of the advice offered that I don?t have much of a quibble with. Of course, this is much easier to accomplish when you have built a high level of trust so that you don?t have a desperate need to be all wrapped up in your partner. I?ll add in this section that doing things at the same time is a nice way to have some spiritual connection ? anything from eating (assuming you?re not in distant time zones) to prayer. Use your imagination! In order to maintain or build a strong connection, you want to include your partner in your life.

?

Mutual total sharing is necessary to avoid the pitfalls of a LDR. If letting someone know the details of your daily life feels intrusive to you, this may not be a relationship for you. This requires emotional fortitude, acceptance, the willingness to listen and share, and also to accept the natural ebb and flow without worrying that in the ?off? times one of you will turn to someone else for connection. One of the benefits of having to work over distance is that it can foster more intimate communication. You are forced to confront and evaluate in a way that doesn?t happen when your nightly routine is to flop on the sofa in front of the TV, physically close but emotionally distant. If you view it as an opportunity to work to build a good foundation without the temptation to plaster over the faults with sex or to isolate yourselves from each other with electronic distractions, a LDR can be fertile ground indeed. Initially relationships better develop depth without physical sex, but this doesn?t imply that sexual attraction is absent.

Have any of you had a long-distance relationship or periods of separation from your spouse? How did you manage?

Simply, Valorie: Evaluating January and the February Goalsteps

As I mentioned in January, I want 2012 to be awesome, I want to live as loudly and voraciously as I can, and I want to skid into New Year's Eve looking back and saying "that. was. awesome."

To do that, I got organized. I made buckets that together define my life: Creativity, Exercise, Friendship, Romance, Self-Improvement, Career, Photography, Internet Everything, Do Uncomfortable Things, Finances, and Travel. Yes, 11 buckets.

In each of those buckets, I set three big huge goals that would make me thrilled to accomplish. In a couple buckets, I actually set 4 goals (oops).

Will I accomplish all 33 35 goals? Maybe. But probably not. Priorities will change. I'll realize it's not something I actually want to do. Some won't be possible at first and will have to wait. Some I've already finished. But I'm already liking this system, even though it was hard to do this month with all the moving.

To get these 35 goals done, each month, I sit down on the first (today!) and I write down one goalstep to do that month. Why 'goalstep'? Because it's the step I'm going to take that month to make something happen. It takes a little pressure off and keeps me moving forward.

My goals for January went okay. It was hard doing a lot while I was trying to find apartments and living in someone else's space. But I think I got a lot done, and while some had to get rolled over, it's been a wonderful process. And now, I want to share some of my February goals with you guys. Partly to keep me accountable, partly so I can't lose the stupid piece of paper I write my goalsteps down on (I did this in January and it threw me for a loop), and partly because I know seeing other people's goals inspires the heck out of me, so maybe I can help someone else out that way too.

The Exercise Bucket
Get a gym membership
Become a yoga studio member
Lose 1 pound (I want to lose 12 pounds over all this year, so 1 pound a month)

The Friendship Bucket
Make all my Skype dates with KJ and Cyndi (I miss you guys so much!)
Make and send a birthday gift for two friends back home
Move into a dog-friendly apartment (this is so I can get a greyhound!)

The Self-Improvement Bucket
Get an apartment (this is so I can set a cleaning schedule and keep to it)
Set up a handwriting template (my ultimate goal is to be good at calligraphy to address letters)
Stop biting my lips

The Photography Bucket
Do a staged bridal shoot (if any of you know a good thrift store I can pick up a wedding dress, or anyone who would be willing to model for me, email me at valorieclarkphotography {at} gmail {dot} com!)
Be a second shooter for a wedding
Save $50+ dollars toward this lens.
Find a few photography contests to enter

The Internet Everything Bucket
Hit 100 followers on this blog (if you've got tips or want to help out, shoot me an email!)
Start selling ads in March (for now, I'm doing button/ad swaps! If you're interested, email me!)
Find out how much it would cost to get my blog it's own domain

The Creativity Bucket
Pick one novel to start working on again
Make this 2012 memories jar
Read A Prayer for Owen Meany

The Do Uncomfortable Things Bucket
Find a place in/near DC to either free-fall or bungee jump (Anyone know of a good place?)
Take good care of my hair (this is so I can donate it in May!)
Sign up for the Color Run in September! (Sign ups open today!)

There are other buckets (Finances, Romance, Travel) but those are more private and/or boring, so I didn't share them. What do you guys think? Anything on here you're doing? Anyone want to sign up for the Color Run with me? It's only a 5k and I need the encouragement!

Also - I'm still looking for guest bloggers and still thinking about that advice column idea. Tell me your opinions!

Ready? Go!

99% A Separation

All Critics (90) | Top Critics (32) | Fresh (90) | Rotten (1) | DVD (2)

Asghar Farhadi's emotionally epic movie is not just a masterpiece dramatically, it is a movie dramatically of its moment.

It's small. It's real. And it's deeply moving.

This is a trenchant emotional thriller that you watch in dread, awe, and amazing aggravation.

Some films wear their artistry so lightly they appear simply to be happening, the inner workings of the story guided by an unseen hand.

The film involves its audience in an unusually direct way, because although we can see the logic of everyone's position, our emotions often disagree.

This is primarily a human story about a marriage unraveling, the husband torn between love for his daughter and devotion to his father, the daughter torn between one parent and the other.

Ambiguous and enigmatic, it revolves around the termination of a marriage in contemporary Tehran.

Farhadi's carefully wrought narrative and the ways it handles the fragile emotions of its characters truly sets it apart, not only from contemporary Iranian cinema but world cinema in general.

What counts is that talented writer/director Asghar Farhadi structures it in a culturally compelling and mysterious way, while balancing all the characters to avoid easily typed "good guys" and "bad guys."

Emotionally resonant beyond the filmmaker's own country and culture, it is a compassionate yet searingly precise film that refuses to name villains, nor to let any of its protagonists off the hook

Sometimes, in an attempt to do the best we can for the people we love, we end up wreaking irreparable damage.

I hope "A Separation" is the beginning of a new cinematic dawn for Iranian filmmakers.

[The film] puts us in the uncomfortable role of the adjudicator.

Culturally specific but universally relatable, this slowly escalating Iranian drama boasts incredibly impressive motivational clarity.

For all the stifled truths of its characters, Farhadi's film feels like a gust of brisk air.

...like being caught in a barbed-wire fence of ethical dilemmas.

Feels like a peek through a neighbor's window.

The progressively tedious atmosphere ultimately prevents the film's final scenes from making any real emotional impact...

WFP: Up to 500,000 may need food aid in Sudan (AP)

JUBA, South Sudan ? The World Food Program estimates that as many as a half million people could be forced to flee Sudan if the government in Khartoum does not allow humanitarian aid into the country, while a top U.S. official said Monday that a humanitarian crisis is looming.

World Food Program Deputy Executive Director Ramiro Lopes da Silva said WFP is in talks with the government in Khartoum to allow its aid workers into the states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan, which lie on the border with South Sudan. An estimated 80,000 people have fled armed rebellion and hunger in the two states and are now in South Sudan.

Sudan is battling the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North, a branch of a guerrilla movement which has fought various regimes in Khartoum for decades. SPLM-North was once part of South Sudan's ruling party during a long running civil war between Sudan's north and south.

South Sudan became the world's newest country last July. Citing security concerns, Khartoum has refused to allow humanitarian aid agencies into the region.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns said Monday that aid groups must be allowed in to Blue Nile and South Kordofan to avert a humanitarian crisis. He said that it's extremely important that humanitarian concerns be addressed.

Lopes said Khartoum is willing to allow humanitarian access to the two states "under a certain set of conditions which we have not accepted." He said Khartoum would not allow Sudanese citizens to be involved in the operations.

Da Silva said the World Food Program is planning for a "worst-case scenario" to assist anywhere from 300,000 to 500,000 refugees in South Sudan should the talks fail.

The main catalyst of the potential influx is a deepening food crisis spurred by erratic rains in Sudan and instability due to the violence.

But according to WFP, things are not much better in South Sudan. In addition to the refugees along the border, an estimated 120,000 people have been affected by recent tribal violence in the volatile state of Jonglei.

In the face of these challenges, WFP estimates that the country's cereal deficit will be at least 440,900 tons (400,000 metric tons) in 2012.

WFP also estimates that about 2.7 million people ? around 30 percent of South Sudan ? will need food aid this year. That estimate does not include refugees that are continuing to flee from Sudan. About 1,000 people a day are crossing into South Sudan, he said.

Da Silva said the assistance will cost an estimated $250 million dollars, of which around $90 million has already been provided. But Da Silva said the lack of roads throughout the country and the coming rainy season mean WFP will not be able to provide aid for the rest of the year if their operations are not fully funded by May.

"Come the beginning of the rainy season we need to have pre-positioned all the food we require basically for the rest of the year until end of November," he said.

South Sudan is unlikely to be able to meet the funding gap. The country is currently engaged in a bitter oil dispute with Sudan. South Sudan has accused Sudan of stealing $815 million worth of crude oil since December. Negotiations between the two countries over the separation of their once unified oil industry have failed to produce agreement, prompting Sudan to begin levying oil exported by South Sudan through pipelines in Sudan.

In response, South Sudan has ordered a complete shutdown of its oil production. South Sudan now says it will not resume production until the two countries agree on a host of issues leftover from their civil war including the demarcation of the border and the return of the Abyei region, which both countries claim.

While the two countries are locked in a dangerous stalemate, millions of lives could be at risk.

"What you have now is a sense of urgency," says WFP's da Silva. "In a couple of months we are on what is typically the hunger season both in Sudan and Southern Sudan and obviously the impact on those populations is potentially very serious. The window for an effective intervention with the populations where they are is narrowing."
