Cheers! America's best beer bars

Mark Manguerra / via Food & Wine

The Father's Office pub in Los Angeles has a draught-dominated menus divided by beer style: malty, hoppy and yeasty/spicy, with a separate menu for rare, primarily Belgian beers.

By Justine Sterling, Food & Wine

In the dark days before the craft beer boom of the 1980s, much of the beer sold in America was as uninspired as the generic bars that served it. But now historic beers, micro bottlings and hyperlocal selections fill bars worth traveling to, from Brooklyn?s geeky Belgian bottle specialist Spuyten Duyvil to New Orleans? tavern Bulldog, which encourages customers to try all 50 pours over the course of their visits by handing out punch cards.

It's not just big cities that are getting all the good bars. In the small town of Luddlington, Mich., The Mitten Bar's co-owner?Megan Payment?draws customers from across state lines by securing rare, Michigan-only beers. ?Once there were guys who heard that we were going to throw Bell?s Hopslam on tap ? and they said they were going to drive here from Iowa,? Payment recalls. The?Hopslam Ale is made in Kalamazoo with pungent, aromatic hops and a dollop of honey.

In honor of the London Olympics, Dave Zinczenko, author of "Eat This, Not That! 2012: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution," shares which food and drinks you should reach for at the pub and which you should avoid.

The Mitten Bar acts as a place of discovery for tourists and townies of all types. ?In my experience, it?s really interesting how many people are now more open to trying things,? Payment says. Like many of the newer craft beer bars, The Mitten offers beer flights ? chosen by the customer or the bartender.??Our age demographic ranges from just 21 to senior citizens,? says Payment, who's only been legally drinking for five years herself. ?The younger generation is influencing the older to [experiment].?

Retail bankruptcies rise 10 per cent as high street ... - Business Matters

Retail insolvencies are accelerating as wet weather and dampened consumer confidence contributed to a 10 per cent rise in bankruptcies over the past three months, with Clinton Cards and Game among victims of the high street cull reports The Guardian.

PricewaterhouseCoopers said retail had been the only blight on bankruptcy figures that showed a reduction for the private sector between April and June. The retail sector had 426 businesses go to the wall in the second quarter, the accountancy said, up from 386 a year ago. However, the total number of corporate insolvencies fell by 3 per cent year-on-year to just under 4,000.

?There has been a clear reduction in the incidence of insolvencies over the current recession compared to previous ones. Retail is the sector which keeps bucking this trend. In fact, quarter on quarter retail insolvencies have increased for every one of the last four quarters,? said Mark Jervis, a PwC partner.

The overall reduction in insolvencies is expected to fuel hopes that there will be an Olympics-assisted economic recovery in the third quarter of 2012, after the Office for National Statistics delivered a shock to the City last week by announcing that UK GDP declined by 0.7 per cent between April and June.

The PwC figures showed there have been 9,113 insolvencies in construction and manufacturing since 2010, but they also confirmed a recent reduction in the rate of bankruptcies in those sectors. Across the UK, 15.5 per cent fewer construction firms had gone bust than in the previous quarter, and 8.4 per cent fewer manufacturers. But given the cloud of economic uncertainty, experts say the figures may not signal a long term improvement with the same pressures on construction continuing through to 2013.

Nick Parrett, the head of property and construction at accountancy Wilkins Kennedy, said: ?The outlook for construction companies is bleak at the moment. In 2012, we?re finally seeing the effects of the government?s austerity programme on the construction industry. Older contracts are coming to an end and aren?t being renewed. Even the recently announced rail infrastructure investment won?t begin for at least 2014.?

He added: ?The quarterly GDP data since the beginning of the year has been dire for the construction industry; shrinking output suggests insolvencies will get far worse. The government has announced billions of pounds-worth of infrastructure investment guarantees, but it?s uncertain how many investors will use them or how many projects will benefit that would have gone ahead anyway without the scheme.? Construction output fell 5.2% between the first and the second quarter.

As well hitting retailers, the poor summer weather has not helped the construction sector either. Heavy rain and flooding would have prevented any significant groundwork, for example.

?Poor weather is the main driver of the usual increases in insolvencies over the winter, while summer?s a chance to make up for the lost time. That won?t be the case this year,? said Parrett.

Of the construction insolvencies over the past two years, about 30 per cent were general construction and civil engineering firms, with the remainder made up of architectural, building, water projects, painting, roofing and plastering. Nearly a third of the manufacturers that have gone out of business in the last two years have been industrial companies, with the rest including aerospace and defence, automotive, chemicals, metals and parts of transport and logistics.

London 2012: Michael Phelps loses 400m Medley Race

Written by Breaking News Online Team ?? Sunday, 29 July 2012 09:25

Sports Desk: The first Swimming race of the London Olympics produced the most shocking result, as defending champion and eight-time Olympic gold medalist in Beijing finished fourth and failed the podium finish.

?

American swimmer Ryan Lochte won the men?s 400-meter individual medley (4:05.18). Brazil?s Thiago Pereira won the silver medal (4:08.86), while Japan?s Kosuke Hagino got the bronze (4:08.94).

?

Phelps had narrowly qualified for the finals, but it was expected that he would rise to the occasion and repeat his Beijing feat, which did not happen.

?

Meanwhile, the first world record in Swimming at the London Olympics was created last night. China's Ye Shiwen clocked 4:28.43 seconds to break the four-year-old record (4:29.45) set by Australian Stephanie Rice and won the gold medal in women's 400-meter individual medley.

?

In Archery, Im Dong-Hyun, a "legally blind" man, combined with Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek to break the record for 216 arrows with a score of 2087 in the team event. He had won gold in the team event at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Family Tree of George Washington Barrett ? TAYLOR FAMILY POEMS

One of my great-grandfathers was George Washington Barrett (September 3, 1873-June 12, 1956). ?His paternal great-grandfather was John Barrett (born circa 1776), probably the son of Reuben Barrett, a soldier on the colonial side of the U.S. Revolutionary War. ?With John Barrett the family settled in Hall County, Georgia, the seat of which is Gainesville. ?John Barrett had a son,?Elisha Chastain Barrett (June 13-1806-May 13, 1886). ?Elisha, born in Pendleton, South Carolina, was a farmer. ?George Washington Barrett, a Methodist of the old school (no alcohol or playing cards) and a staunch Victorian (down to saying ?limbs? instead of ?legs?), described him as follows:

He was a loyal friend, sunny by serious-minded, an obliging neighbor. ?He was strictly temperate, drank no alcoholic beverage, used no tobacco, was as far as any man from profaning God?s name. ?In the years when one must take long trips to market, he took great care to see that his team rested on the Sabbath day. ?He would no more have engaged in a game of cards than he would have undertaken a trip to the moon?.

As a Christian and church official he was very devout and faithful. ?He read his Bible much. ?He received much pleasure and profit from reading two books of sermons, one by Bishop Thomas A. Morris of the Methodist Church and one by Rev. Ira L. Potter of the Georgia Conference. ?In his latter years, if unable to attend church services on Sunday, he would read from these books and his Bible, often reading aloud, till his cup of rejoicing would overflow.

?George W. Barrett, Descendants of John Barrett and William Winburn (Emory University, Banner Press, 1949), page 6

Elisha was a member of what is now First United Methodist Church, Gainesville, Georgia.

He married twice. ?His first wife was Nancy Mabry (February 2, 1810-January or February 1849), whom he wedded on January 15, 1828. ?She died a few weeks after giving birth to a daughter, Nancy Elizabeth, her tenth child. ?Wife number two was Lee Ann Pendely (June 1, 1823-July 10, 1910), married to Elijah from September 28, 1876.

William Wesley Barrett (January 20-1835-December 30, 1911), father of George Washington Barrett, was the fourth child of Elisha and Nancy. ?He was a lifelong Methodist. ?William Wesley was also a Confederate veteran, having served in Company K, 43rd Georgia Regiment from March 1862 until the end of that treasonous war. ?(I added the ?treasonous? aspect of that sentence.) ?Of William Wesley Barrett my great-grandfather wrote:

The family altar was a fixture in his home. ?He sought to train his children wisely and to shield them from the sins of the day. ?If any one profaned God?s name in the presence of his children he was sure to let them know he disapproved of it. ?His pastor was a welcomed visitor in his home. ?He was neighborly and hospitable to all. ?His faith in God was never shaken. ?During his latter years he read his Bible and prayed much. ?He was ready to go or to suffer as the Lord willed.

He was a steward in the church and served some years as the Superintendent of the Sunday School at Oakwood, Ga. ?The Methodist Church there grew out of the school. ?He was highly esteemed by all who knew him.

He married Miss Sarah Jane Winburn of Jefferson, Georgia, September 1, 1859. ?She was born February 19, 1838, and died January 26, 1883. ?She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Winburn. ?She was quite a beautiful young woman and a devoted Christian. ?One of father?s sisters told me: ??I always will believe your Mother was the the best woman I ever knew.?

?page 10

George Washington Barrett was one of six children of that marriage.

This is how my great-grandfather described himself:

George Washington Barrett, born Sept. 3, 1873. ?Joined the church when seven years of age. ?Was licensed to preach Nov. 15, 1894. ?Entered Young Harris College December 1, 1895, graduating with an A.B. degree, May 22, 1899. ?He averaged almost a sermon a month at the college.

In July, 1899, he was appointed supply pastor of the Alpharetta circuit, whose pastor was sick. ?In November, 1899, he was admitted on trial by the North Georgia Conference and was ordained deacon also. ?He was returned to the Alpharetta charge. ?He served as pastor without a break till reaching retirement age. ?November, 1945, having preached 6,082 sermons. ?He served as Secretary of 25 District Conferences, being pastor-host of three of them; for thirty-five years served somewhere on the Conference staff of secretaries, twenty-one of which he was Conference Secretary and for eighteen years was editor of the Conference Minutes.

On January 17, 1900, he married Miss Nellie Seguin Fox of Atlanta, Ga. ?She was the daughter of Dr. James O. and Sarah Thomas Fox. ?She was born at Hot Springs, Ark., Sept. 18, 1876. ?She graduated in art at Marion, Ala., and taught art two years at Young Harris College.

?pages 12-13

They had six children, including Nell Fox Barrett, who married John Dodson Taylor, Jr., on June 12, 1937.

I moved to Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, in August 2005. ?This change in geographical location brought me close to family history, for Gainesville and Oakwood are only about an hour away from my home. ?And Winder, where George Washington Barrett served in 1925-1926, is about twenty minutes (depending on traffic) away from my front door. ?My explorations of the Barrett side of my family history have turned up interesting details, some of them from the 1978 history of Barrow County, Georgia. ?Beadland to Barrow: ?A History of Barrow County, Georgia, from the Earliest Times to the Present (Atlanta: ?Cherokee Publishing Company, 1978; reprinted, 1983), contains a history of First United Methodist Church (pages 276-280), part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, when my great-grandfather served as pastor there, and features a photograph of the parsonage where the Barretts, including my grandmother, Nell Fox Barrett Taylor, lived for a year, on page 265. ?Unfortunately, the Winder church building in which my great-grandfather preached burned down (probably due to a lightning strike) a few days ago. ?(http://onlineathens.com/local-news/2012-07-27/fire-destroys-century-old-church-building-winder)

I wrote that my great-grandfather was an old-style Methodist. ?Another piece of supporting evidence for this is the fact that, in 1928, he broke party ranks and voted for Herbert Hoover for President. ?The reason was simple: ?the Democratic Party had become the first major political party to nominate a Roman Catholic for President of the United States. ?Most Americans do not think about Roman Catholicism as a disqualifying factor for the Presidency anymore, for attitudes have changed. ?I can think of a number of practicing Roman Catholics have sought the Presidential nomination of either the Democratic or the Republican Party since John F. Kennedy won the highest office in 1960. ?But his campaign had to contend with anti-Roman Catholic bias. ?In my library I have a pamphlet?a reprinted article, really?by George L. Ford, Executive Director of the National Association of Evangelicals, in 1960. ?The title of

A Roman Catholic President: ?How Free from Church Control?

speaks for itself. ?Each of us is, to a great extent, a product of our formative environment. ?I am who I am for a variety of reasons, including my childhood and home life then. ?I apply the same principle when trying to understand my great-grandfather, a product of a very different social climate.

Hay Lucky Reem putting her record at stake in the Greyhound & Pet World Puppy Oaks 525 Semi-Final

Three in the field set for the Greyhound & Pet World Puppy Oaks 525 Semi-Final have won in their most recent racing attempt. The 525 yards flat competition will be hosted by Harold?s Cross on 27th July, 2012. The prize money set for the winner is ?75. The two most dominant puppies in the race today are Mayo Daisey and Hay Lucky Reem.

Coincidently the race for them today will be the fifth career outing. Droopys Vieri?s daughter is unbeaten in the four outings while Mayo Daisey has lost the first two attempts of the career and is bidding for the first ever hat-trick today.

She has been racing at Harold?s Cross and it was only one of her training sessions that was at Dundalk. The two-year-old has raced over 525 yards and her fifth career outing will be for the exact same distance.

The second victory that the Cawley trained tossed on her profile was in the Greyhound & Pet World Puppy Oaks 525 Round 1 Heat 1 on 20th July, 2012 at Harold?s Cross.

The two-year-old out of, Ardera Spice, was very fast to race away after leaving the first stall. She timed the track distance in 28.97 seconds and edged past the evening?s favourite, Blue Chicago by a neck?s margin.

If her struggle for the hat-trick will come true today or not, will unfold soon.

Droopys Vieri?s unbeaten daughter, Hay Lucky Reem, has raced at three different venues in her short experience and monopolised her debut race at Harold?s Cross that was followed by a training session at the same track.

The black bitch won the third heat of the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks 525 Round 1 on 20th July, 2012 over 525 yards. The favourite entry set into an early pace and turned out to be the first one to lead, thusly timing the track distance in 28.90 seconds.

She defeated the runner-up, Matts Mini by 5 ? lengths.

Her record that already comprises of four successes is at risk today.

Completing the line-up for tonight are Donanes Facebook, Plutos Rena, Mandys Blossom and Jibberish.

Mitt Romney: Arab Spring Could've Been Avoided By Bush's 'Freedom Agenda'

In an interview with the right-wing Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, Mitt Romney said that the Arab Spring might never have happened had Bush's "freedom agenda" not been prematurely halted by President Barack Obama.

"President [George W.] Bush urged [deposed Egyptian President] Hosni Mubarak to move toward a more democratic posture, but President Obama abandoned the freedom agenda and we are seeing today a whirlwind of tumult in the Middle East in part because these nations did not embrace the reforms that could have changed the course of their history, in a more peaceful manner," Romney said.

Romney argued that with the rise of democratically elected Islamist governments in some of the countries undergoing revolutions -- Egypt and Tunisia in particular -- the Arab Spring has turned out to be less of a boon for Western interests than it initially appeared.

"Clearly we're disappointed in seeing Tunisia and Morocco elect Islamist governments. We're very concerned in seeing the new leader in Egypt as an Islamist leader. It is our hope to move these nations toward a more modern view of the world and to not present a threat to their neighbors and to the other nations of the world," he said.

The interview, which comes in the lead-up to Romney's arrival in Israel on Saturday, was conducted earlier in the week in Reno, Nev., in keeping with his intention to avoid criticizing a sitting president while traveling overseas. Israel Hayom is owned by the Sheldon Adelson, an American citizen who is one of the leading financiers of the Republican Party and a major donor to Romney's campaign.

In his second inaugural address, Bush made an impassioned stand for democratic expression around the world, pledging that "all who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know: the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors." (That posture sometimes included change by force.) When the Egyptian government cracked down on political dissent, Bush's Secretary of State took a hard line and canceled a planned visit.

Romney did not elaborate in the interview whether he believes that Bush's strategy, if it had been seen to fruition, would have resulted in the democratic overthrow of Mubarak's government or the preservation of his administration through internal reforms.

When the Arab Spring began, many advocates of Bush's sweeping foreign policy made an argument different to that advanced by Romney in the interview, asserting that it was Bush's agenda that served as the main impetus for the revolutions, and that Obama had turned his back on that policy.

Kenya to appeal ending of ban on separatists

Kenya will appeal the overturning of a ban on a separatist group, the Mombasa Republic Council (MRC), who want to split the popular tourist coastal region from the country, officials said Thursday.

The move follows a High Court ruling made in the port city of Mombasa on Wednesday that revoked a 2010 decision to outlaw the group, who complain they have been marginalised by an elite based inland in the capital Nairobi.

"Any group or organisation challenging the constitutional authority and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kenya cannot enjoy protection by the constitution," Deputy Solicitor-General Muthoni Kimani said in a statement.

The three-judge panel on Wednesday advised the MRC to pursue its separatist ambitions through the courts.

"Secession can only be achieved by far-reaching amendments to the constitution," the judgment read.

President Mwai Kibaki has repeatedly rejected the group's separatist calls, and the national security committee is expected to meet on Thursday to address the implications of the court ruling.

"The disadvantage is that we cannot charge the leaders of the organisation - they may incite members into criminal activities," said Charles Owino, a police spokesman.

"We will still charge those who break the law as individuals, and not as members belonging to an organisation."

Top MRC official Randu Nzai welcomed the ruling, and said the group was willing to hold talks with government officials as they continued with their campaign for secession.

"We shall sit at the table with them as long as they know the ultimate goal is to go our separate ways...The decades of neglect can only be corrected by secession," Nzai said.

"We thank the courts for the ruling, and now we are free to tell our people what we are all about, no one will be victimised for joining us," he added.

Police have blamed several violent acts to the group, including a recent disruption of training by the election commission ahead of national elections next year.

Every 3 months re-visit this plan and extend it for the next six months: Decide whom you need to phone, email and lunch to keep the relationship strong and healthy. This should be time outside of the day-to-day work stuff ? i.e. time to get to know them better.? Write this plan for the next 3-6 months, and diarise it. If you have the luxury of a secretary or PA, involve them in booking your meetings and making the plan happen. If they know whom you want to meet physically, and in what frequency then you can delegate this down to them to make this happen.

4. Write a blog

One of the best ways to keep yourself on your network?s radar is to send them carefully selected articles from time to time. Of course, you don?t need to have personally written these articles, or assume that you need to write all of them. Your own blog gives you a voice, a publishing outlet and a way of raising your profile and credibility with people in your network.

5. Be innovative with the time you have available

If, like myself, you have spent anytime in professional services, you will know that in this industry the standard ?getting-to-know-you? medium is lunching. Now, I like a good lunch like the best person ? but there are more options than lunching. How about, meeting for a drink after work, having an early evening meal, having a breakfast meeting, going for a coffee, going to an event together ? the list is endless. Within your company or industry, there will be a standard preferred getting to know you mechanism. This doesn?t mean to say you need to slavish follow this route.

What else would you add to this list?

Low Cost Internet Hosting Versus Zero Cost Internet ... - promotional

When you?re stepping into the world wide web for the first time and also searching for web hosting companies to operate your website, then now you should have a couple of choices to choose between.

1- Select zero cost services
2- Pick low-cost services

When getting many domains, in the event that you?re like me, you will discover that you will be eternally flooded every time with up-sales, throughout all of the webpages prior to the final checkout.

Today, since we are well aware, there is absolutely no such thing as no cost web hosting, since you may still pay it off one way or another.

When I stated that buying a cheap domain name from a registrar and also affordable internet hosting from a service provider, ended up saving you a lot of money, then it is in fact what I talk about as cheap hosting web, i.e. you will spend less in the event that you buy both separately.

Once you realize what website hosting is and also where you can buy it through, you will soon realize, how much money you?re throwing down the sink.

Choosing a low cost service can be helpful for your internet venture when compared to free services. In this short article we?re going to tell you how a low cost web hosting can be a more effective option over free web hosting.

Prior to we drill down into the details, it is more effective to describe the real difference between cost-free and also cheap services.

Within free of charge web hosting, you get free of charge website space to operate your website and also within cheap internet hosting, you need to pay minimum fee for this service. Free option can be helpful, in the event that you?re going to have individual website for experimenting and also learning.

When you?re planning to operate an online enterprise or searching for top quality services, then cheap host would be a more effective option indeed.

Within free of charge web hosting, there is absolutely no credibility of service which means that it can be discontinued at any time without any prior notice. There is no guarantee that your website and also data will likely be safe and also online. It won?t only disturb your internet appearance but will even destroy almost all hard work you have invested in it.

We fully understand that most people earn money with their web pages by placing website banners and also text links. In the event of free websites you should have very small control over the placement of advertisements for profits generation, while your internet host can get advantage of your traffic by placing their own ads on your website. Therefore, cheap web hosting is best choice to have the complete benefits of your website by placing advertisement in accordance to your own selection and also by keeping all profits gained through internet advertisement.

Cheap services would be the best way to reduce costs with actual overall performance. Web services have become extremely cost-effective nowadays. There are actually numerous great cheap hosting companies out there encouraging you to host web pages without difficulty. Today, you can host a small business website or blog below $10 each month that wasn?t possible in past.

Further, you can cut regular expense implementing special coupons to have discounts provided by companies at special occasions. Constantly look for a coupon code right before signing up with any service provider.

Getting an inexpensive service provider can save your money without sacrificing the performance. The best strategy is to compare different plans or stick to expert tips.

Family Tree: Losing parents at a young age and growth through ...

At the gas pump today a friendly stranger struck up a conversation. This person was waiting for me to finish washing my windows so he could use the squeegee sponge thingamajig next. He said, ?nice car? to which I thanked him and told him I?d bought it from my mom when she became ill and was no longer able to drive. He said it might be good for 300,000 miles if I took good care of it. I said, ?I hope so!? Then he asked if she was still living. I told him no, she passed away a little over a year ago. He told me his mom died when he was only 21 and that it had made a big impact on his life. It was time to move on, so I didn?t find out what he meant by that. I left with thoughts about how each of us never knows when we will lose someone we love. Catastrophes such as the violent tragedy in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater, the events of 9/11, war, car accidents; natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes; unexpected illnesses of children, young and elderly; and the inevitable death by old-age cause heart-breaking losses.

I began to consider my parents lives. When she was still a part of my life, my mom helped me record our genealogy information on a family tree chart I designed. Both of my grandmothers lived long lives, but I cannot say the same for my grandfathers. My mother?s father died from illness when she was only 17. My father was only 15 when he lost his father?a farmer struck by lightening while working in the field with his three sons and his horses. My father and his two brothers? lives were spared. I don?t like to imagine how hard it was to lose their pa that way and for their sister and ma who were just a short distance away in their home. When anyone says the chances of being struck by lightening are slim to none, I differ, based on my own family history.

Not everyone will die of old age. It?s important to consider this as we live our lives. Life is precious. The family and friends we have are blessings. I can clearly see the peace, love and comfort of God shine through the lives of so many faithful people as they?ve touched my life when I?ve shared a trouble or sadness with them. Both of my grandmothers and their children (my parents, aunts and uncles) surely received loving kindness, sympathy, comfort and encouragement from their Christian friends and relatives when they suffered the loss of their husbands/fathers. I am learning that tragedies of all types?whether it be the loss of life or any kind of failure or suffering?has a higher purpose: to bring us closer to God and share His love as we serve Him by bearing each other?s burdens.

I wonder, since both of my parents each lost their father at a young age, was this common experience something that may have drawn them to each other? It certainly seems like more than a simple coincidence. The compassion they had learned from all of the people who surrounded them during their losses was now a part of their own character. This was something that they truly understood about each other. This love of God is what they built their marriage upon for 58 years until death parted them. How thankful I am that this love and eternal peace is what they shared with me. Now, through the gift of faith?by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?they are united with God and all who share that faith?their loved ones who went before them and eventually with all who will meet them some day in eternity where there is no more pain and sorrow.

The fact that both of my grandma?s were named Ida just might be a coincidence, however, what comes next?following their losses?was different for each. My fraternal grandma never remarried. She was 47 when her husband died from a natural disaster and she remained a widow for the the next 42 years of her life. My maternal grandma remarried twice. She lost her husband when she was 42; lost her second husband when she was 54; and lost her third husband (the ?grandpa? I knew) when she was 74. Our lives certainly are impacted by every event and person that shapes the path we follow. My grandmothers were truly blessings to me and each person within their circles.

In the big picture of life, I am amazed at how intricately woven together I am with other people?like mesh. Beginning from conception, we were physically and emotionally connected to our mothers. When we were born our uniqueness is tied to each person in our immediate family and circle of relatives and friends. As we grow up, our circle expands. With technology, social media or by chance, we have knowledge about lives of people we don?t know personally and are reconnected to those from our past. The size of our circle no longer has bounds. I will never know the story the gentleman at the gas station might have shared, but what he said made me think. We learn from others and are inspired by them. We empathize with them and help when we can. We pray.

Should You Wait for the iPhone 5?

For most companies, selling 26 million of any product would be reason to jump for joy. For Apple, however, when it posted iPhone sales of just 26 million in the previous quarter, it was a disappointment.

[More from Mashable: Hands On: Speaker Transforms Your iOS Device into a Desktop Phone]

Analysts had predicted Apple would sell about 29 million iPhones, a drop from the 35.1 million sold the last quarter, but a manageable one. But 26 million is more like a free-fall -- especially when you consider Apple's iPhone sales increased over the same period in 2011, even though that year's new model, the iPhone 4S, was still months away from being announced.

As CEO Tim Cook himself observed on Apple's earnings call, speculation about the next iPhone -- the so-called "iPhone 5" -- may have played a part. After all, if you're thinking about buying an iPhone, and you're convinced Apple will debut its latest and greatest smartphone in a few short months, why wouldn't you wait?

[More from Mashable: Apple?s Q3 Earnings: The Infographic]

It's not quite that simple, though. The same thoughts surely occurred to buyers last year, but there was no drop in sales until the summer, even though rumors were arguably even more rampant. There are two greater forces at work here: 1) The technologies that are rumored to be coming to the next iPhone are generational leaps in mobile tech, not mere incremental upgrades. And 2) Android is offering those very technologies, giving competing phones a greater edge.

So if you're in the market for a smartphone today, is it a good idea to still wait patiently for the iPhone 5 (which, based on past history, is due to launch in the early fall) or should you start eyeing the competition? And why not get an iPhone 4S anyway? It's still relatively new. Here's what you should be thinking about:

Leaps in Mobile Tech

Apple, of course, hasn't said one word about what the next iPhone will be, or even if there'll be one. However, per usual, there are dozens if not hundreds of rumors and alleged leaks about what features the iPhone 5 will have. A couple of the most talked-about abilities the iPhone 5 might have are 4G LTE and NFC (near-field communication).

Anyone who's used an LTE phone can tell you it's a huge leap in connection speed over 3G technologies, which are what current iPhones all have (misleading indicators on the AT&T version be damned). There's simply no way the iPhone 5 doesn't have LTE. The connections give a speed boost to all data tasks -- from watching HD videos to downloading email attachments.

However, this doesn't come free. In addition to buying the new phone, you may want to get a new data plan, since LTE phones, by their nature, eat up data much more quickly. Also keep in mind that the carriers are pushing for users to switch away from unlimited plans. The carriers haven't said anything about what sort of plans will be available for the iPhone 5 either, but it seems doubtful any unlimited plans will be in the cards, even "grandfathered" ones.

Then there's NFC, the extremely short-range wireless tech that enables mobile payments. This feature is becoming so commonplace on phones that it's hard to see Apple ignoring it yet again. In addition, many see Apple's introduction of Passbook in iOS 6 as its first step into the mobile-payments space. Apple needs to have NFC in the next iPhone if it hopes to have any real influence there.

Besides the addition of LTE and NFC, there looks to be a strong chance Apple will pump up the size of the iPhone's screen to at least 4 inches and shrink the dock connector to a mini-size proprietary plug. Both upgrades have obvious advantages, although a smaller jack would present an issue for anyone who uses a lot of legacy iPhone accessories. While Apple would be crazy not to release an adapter, it might not be included with the phone and it's not necessarily something you'd carry around with you in any case.

At the same time, a smaller dock connector would help Apple improve on one of the features it holds up high: its thin design.

Android's Edge

So waiting for the iPhone 5 seems like a good idea, mainly for the high-speed LTE connection and larger screen, but NFC and a potentially slimmer phone are nice, too (again, all rumor). However, if you wanted all those features and aren't yet an iPhone user, you can get them all today from any number of handsets on the Android platform.

Besides all those hardware features, Android phones have better native camera apps than the iPhone's. Newer Android phones like the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III are equipped with burst modes and the ability to snap pictures while shooting video. On top of that, with the latest OS software, Jelly Bean, Android phones can now match Siri in terms of voice abilities.

It's with the software, however, where Android falls down. Fragmentation is a huge problem for the platform, meaning once you commit to a device, it's a big question mark as to when the latest version of the Android OS -- or even the one before that -- will be available to you.

As for the other platform options, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, both Microsoft and RIM are planning major upgrades -- with new hardware -- in the next several months. As a first-time purchase, neither are really worth considering until then.

Waiting: Smarter Than Usual

While it's generally a bad idea to wait for a mythical product with phantom features, the iPhone 5 is a special case. We can reasonably predict what some of the major upgrades will be over the iPhone 4S, and they are indeed major (LTE being the biggie).

The iPhone 4S is still a fine phone -- it's thin, it has a well-performing processor in the dual-core Apple A5 chip and of course there's Siri. But speaking as someone who reviews competing phones regularly, it's starting to look, well, old. In addition to obvious advantage of LTE, competing handsets are thinner, faster, lighter and have bigger screens.

The iPhone 5 looks sure to have most, if not all of those things, too, but it won't get here for a few months. Should you wait? If you were thinking about an iPhone 4S, I'd say yes -- at least for most people. But if you're not yet married to Apple, the latest Android phones already have pretty much everything that will make the next iPhone special (probably).

Apple can blame rumors and speculation all it wants, but the bottom line is that the current iPhone is now a generation behind, technologically, the state-of-the-art phones of today. LTE, NFC and big screens aren't incremental upgrades -- they're the features that will define smartphones for the next few years. For anyone dead-set on buying an Apple phone that will stay current for more than a few months, though, the smart choice is to wait.

Timothy Persson named CEO at Hess Collection winery company, President Gary Bulger 'departs'

Timothy Persson, new CEO at The Hess Collection winery.

The Hess Collection, a Napa-based winery that is part of Hess Family Estates, said Monday that Timothy Persson is now chief executive officer, following the ?departure? of President Gary Bulger.

The company said Bulger had been president since 2009, and had been with The Hess Collection for nearly two decades, starting as a regional sales manager in 1995. It didn't say why Bulger was leaving, and officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The transition appeared to be amicable, however. Bulger?s record with the company ?is truly remarkable, and one of long-standing dedication and loyalty,? Persson said in a July 23 statement.

Persson, a member of the Hess family, is also chairman of the board and a Hess Family Estates managing director.

Nick Stahl: Found, Undergoing Treatment

Nick Stahl is alive and, hopefully, on his way to doing well.

The actor - who went missing on two occasions, most recently in mid-June following a trip to rehab - has found his way back to his family and is on the path to recovery, a source tells TMZ.

Stahl is reportedly attending AA classes and loved ones say he's "in a good place." It's unclear where the actor is residing at the moment, but sources confirm it is not at home.

Stahl even Tweeted a photo of himself and his wife tweeted yesterday.

The former Terminator star was initially reported missing in May, and then once again a month later. Let's all hope that's never the case again.
