Attack on Indian mission in Afghanistan raises specter of regional struggle

By Rafiq Shirzad

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Insurgents attacked the Indian consulate in Afghanistan's eastern capital on Saturday, killing nine people and reinforcing fears that a bloody regional power struggle will be played out in the country once most foreign troops leave.

Twenty-three people were wounded when checkpoint guards stopped three attackers in a car as they approached the consulate in Jalalbabad city, the office of the governor of Nangarhar province, Gul Agha Sherzai, said in a statement.

Two attackers leapt from the car and a gunfight broke out, while the third detonated explosives. No Indian officials were killed, though the blast badly damaged a mosque and dozens of homes and small shops nearby.

India condemned the attack and, without naming any country or group, blamed outside forces.

"This attack has once again highlighted that the main threat to Afghanistan's security and stability stems from terrorism and the terror machine that continues to operate from beyond its borders," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan have long vied for power and influence in Afghanistan. Many see their struggle intensifying after the departure of most international forces by the end of next year.

Afghans fear the void left by the NATO-led foreign forces could lead to yet another round of bloody external interference in the impoverished and violence-racked country.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is seen as close to India and strongly opposed to the Taliban, who some say is supported by elements of the Pakistani state, in particular its powerful intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The Taliban, which spearheads armed opposition to Karzai's Western-backed government, denied responsibility for Saturday's attack on the Indian mission close to Pakistan's border.

Attacks on the Indian embassy in Kabul - there were two during 2008 and 2009 that together killed more than 50 people - led to accusations by Karzai that Pakistan was attempting to compromise India-Afghanistan relations. He gave no evidence for his assertion, and Pakistan denied it was true.

Earlier on Saturday, India's Mail Today reported that New Delhi's ambassador to Kabul was recently warned that the ISI had paid the Haqqani insurgent network - which is allied with the Taliban - to assassinate him.

"It was a specific alert. A team of security officials was sent to Afghanistan for a security review and it has made some recommendations. Clearly the aim is to pin down our top diplomat so we back off from our work," a senior official told the daily.

Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin declined to comment on the report, which was sourced to Indian officials who had seen communication intercepts.

A Pakistani security official dubbed the report "nonsense". "Why would we do such a thing when we are trying to improve economic ties with India?" he said.

Movie review: Stars Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg fired up in ...

This image released by Universal Pictures shows Paula Patton, left, and Denzel Washington in a scene from "2 Guns." (AP Photo/Universal Pictures, Patti Perret)

Review ? Chemistry propels overblown buddy-cop thriller.

A buddy-cop movie on steroids, "2 Guns" fires off smart-alecky one-liners and bullets at equal rates ? as the stars make a convoluted and overwritten script work.

Bobby (Denzel Washington) and Stig (Mark Wahlberg) are introduced as criminals working together to curry favor with a Mexican drug lord, Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos). What neither man knows is that the other is working undercover for the U.S. government. Bobby is a DEA agent trying to bring down Greco?s cartel, while Stig works for Navy intelligence and is under orders to bring Bobby down.

?

HHH

?2 Guns?

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg make a good team in a movie that mixes solid action and ridiculous dialogue.

Where ? Theaters everywhere.

When ? Opens Friday, Aug. 2.

Rating ? R for violence throughout, language and brief nudity.

Running time ? 109 minutes.

When the two rob a bank where they think Greco stashes his drug proceeds, they discover a whole lot more money than they expected. They also find that they have been double-crossed and set up to take the rap for the robbery and worse. That?s when a shadowy and flamboyant figure, Earl (Bill Paxton), shows up demanding his money and leaving a string of corpses. With no one else to turn to, Bobby and Stig reluctantly team up to clear their names.

Also in the mix are Stig?s superior, Cmdr. Quince (James Marsden), and Bobby?s DEA colleague and sometime lover Deb (Paula Patton).

Icelandic director Baltasar Korm?kur, who directed Wahlberg in the smart 2012 thriller "Contraband," creates some effective action set pieces ? including an over-the-top finale that includes exploding cars, helicopter machine guns and a stampede of bulls.

The plot-heavy script, an adaptation of Steven Grant?s graphic-novel series, has erratic tone shifts and too much clever-to-be-clever dialogue. It?s as if screenwriter Blake Masters, a TV writer making his movie debut, swallowed the Shane Black action-movie playbook and the Quentin Tarantino dialogue generator and is regurgitating pieces of both all over the place.

That said, Washington?s deceptively easygoing charm and Wahlberg?s fast-talking pugnacity make for an entertainingly sweet-and-sour partnership. The one-liners coming out of their mouths may be phony, but these actors infuse them with a sense of fun among the mayhem.

AOL Lays Off Members Of AIM, Video Production, And HR Teams

aol logoAOL made another round of cuts today. The news was first reported in Valleywag, which said the layoffs "won't break any records for AOL" (which owns TechCrunch) and that the cuts include some recent hires. A spokesperson for AOL (which owns TechCrunch) declined to comment, but a source with knowledge of the company confirmed that there were layoffs today, and that, as reported, they affected the AIM, video production, and human resources teams. (AOL reportedly laid off 40 members of AIM team last year.) Although my source did not say how many people were affected, they did note that there are other areas of AOL that are still hiring.

Baseball players face toughest standards in North American pro sports

Commissioner Bud Selig long has said that Major League Baseball holds itself to a ?higher standard? than other professional sports.

For a long time ? and it still applies ? MLB allows a lower percentage of its teams (33 percent) to qualify for postseason play, than the other major North American pro sports, compared to 37.5 percent for football and better than 50 percent or so for basketball and hockey.

More recently, the ?higher standard? phrase has been applied to MLB?s more comprehensive drug testing policy, and far stricter penalties that are issued by the other sports.

But the standard has been set so high now that some of baseball?s greatest stars probably never will get the Hall-of-Fame recognition they would have received in other sports.

For instance, there are several former stars (and two current ones) who have combined for six league batting titles, 15 home-run championships, six runs-batted-in crowns, 13 Most Valuable Player awards and seven Cy Young awards (all by one man), who have been kept out, or surely will be kept out, of the Hall of Fame by the baseball writers.

The man who has the most career hits (Pete Rose), the man who has the most home runs (Barry Bonds) and the man who is second, by one win, for most victories by a living pitcher (Roger Clemens) all are the outside looking in. So, too, are Sammy Sosa, the only man to hit 60 or more home runs three times; Rafael Palmeiro, the only man to have 3,000 hits and more than 500 home runs who won?t be in the Hall, as well as former Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire, the first man to hit 70 home runs.

Rose has been suspended for betting on baseball. The others are out for their association with steroids.

Now along come Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun. Rodriguez, who might never play again after Major League Baseball is through with punishing him, is the only righthanded hitter to belt 50 or more homers three times in the American League. A three-time American League MVP, Rodriguez?s 647 homers rank him fifth all time.

But what do those numbers really mean now? And, for that matter, what do the numbers Braun put up to win the National League MVP for Milwaukee in 2011 mean? (He hit 33 homers, had 111 RBIs and a .331 batting average then.) Or the league-leading 41 home runs he had last year?

Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz, a likely candidate to be suspended, hit six home runs in the American League championship series in 2011. That?s a record for one postseason series. But should it be?

Baseball always has been a game of numbers, way before the sabermathematicians became involved. Now that MLB is taking these unprecedented steps to help clean up the game, maybe we can start believing performance numbers again.

But, perhaps the only numbers that really should have mattered anyway are the final league standings.

As an aside, the suspension of Braun and the imminent suspensions of a handful of other stars might actually be a slight benefit for Bonds and Clemens in their chances to make the Hall of Fame. Each received less than 40 percent of the vote in their first year of eligibility last year. But despite their known and perceived alignment with the PED culture, they never were suspended.

THE PEAVY FACTOR

For those who wanted the Cardinals to acquire recently traded Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy, who is owed $14.5 million next year, here are a few cautionary notes about Boston?s new pitcher.

Including this year, Peavy, 32, has been on the disabled list seven times since 2004. That doesn?t count the time Peavy, then with San Diego, spent in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after his playoff start in 2005 when he was found to have suffered two rib fractures, a similar injury to that which disabled him this year.

Peavy was a Cy Young Award winner in 2007 when he was 19-6 for the Padres. Before his scheduled start Saturday for the Red Sox, he was just 52-46 since then and he hardly has been either a grizzled or successful playoff pitcher.

He has made two playoff starts, both against the Cardinals in 2005 and 2006 at the division level. He lost both, allowing 19 hits, including three homers, and 13 runs in 9 2/3 innings. That?s an ERA of 12.10 and an opponents? batting average of .442.

Lance Lynn, the pitcher who, in theory, Peavy would be moving ahead of as a No. 2 playoff starter behind Adam Wainwright, has won 30 games in the last two seasons. No one else in the National League has won as many.

DODGERS REBOUND

Much has been made of the Los Angeles? Dodgers? remarkable ascent since June 3, the day Cuban rookie Yasiel Puig made his big-league debut. On that morning, the Dodgers were 23-32 and in last place on the National League Western Division, 8? games behind Arizona.

In the two months after that, Puig hit .367 with 11 homers, 11 doubles and 24 runs batted in as the Dodgers went 35-17 and swept into first place. But not to be overlooked is what Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez accomplished virtually in the same time frame.

Returning from a hamstring injury that kept him out of all but four games in the first two months, Ramirez returned to the lineup on June 4 and went on a tear in which he hit .364 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs.

Injured Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina easily was the first-half MVP in the National League but his health and availability for the second half are in question, as are the Cardinals? chances of winning the division. If the Dodgers stay hot, a case could be made for either Ramirez or Puig, even with them each potentially playing only a four-month season.

Kenyan lawyer sues Israel, Italy over killing of Jesus

  • ?The ICJ has no jurisdiction for such a case ?Spokesperson

A Kenyan lawyer has filed a petition with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, suggesting that the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ was unlawful, and The State of Israel among others should be held responsible.

Dola Indidis, a lawyer and former spokesman of the Kenyan Judiciary is reportedly attempting to sue Tiberius (Emperor of Rome 42 BC-37AD), Pontius Pilate, a selection of Jewish elders, King Herod, the Republic of Italy and the State of Israel.

?Evidence today is on record in the Bible, and you cannot discredit the Bible,? Indidis said. Even though those he suggests should have been convicted during the original trial have not been alive for more than 2000 years, Indidis insists that the government for whom they acted can and should still be held responsible. ?I filed the case because it?s my duty to uphold the dignity of Jesus and I have gone to the ICJ to seek justice for the man from Nazareth.

His selective and malicious prosecution violated his human rights through judicial misconduct, abuse of office, bias and prejudice,? he said Indidis apparently named the states of Italy and Israel in the lawsuit because upon the attainment of independence, the two states incorporated the laws of the Roman Empire that were in force at the time of the Crucifixion.

He is challenging the mode of questioning used during Jesus? trial, prosecution, hearing and sentencing; the form of punishment meted out on him while undergoing judicial proceedings and the substance of the information used to convict him.

The case was first filed in the High Court in Nairobi, but was rejected. Indidis then applied to have it heard at the ICJ, which is rumoured to have constituted a pre-trial panel to consider the case.

When asked about the case, however, a spokesperson for the ICJ said, ?The ICJ has no jurisdiction for such a case. The ICJ settles disputes between states. It is not even theoretically possible for us to consider this case.?

Indidis says he wants to establish what crime Jesus was charged with and prays that the court decides ?that the proceedings before the Roman courts were a nullity in law, for they did not conform to the rule of law at the material time and any time thereafter.?

?Some of those present spat in his face, struck him with their fists, slapped him, taunted him, and pronounced him worthy of death,? Indidis argues. When Jesus died, Indidis insists, he was not given an opportunity to be heard.

?I am suing as a friend,? he said. Indidis insisted on the validity of his case, saying ?I know with a matter of fact and truth we have a good case with a high probability of success and I hope it is done in my lifetime.?

Will You Look More Attractive After Plastic Surgery? - Health News ...

women-history-plastic-surgery-400x400

By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) ? Facial plastic surgery may turn back the hands of time, but new research suggests it may not, alas, boost attractiveness.

For this small study, 50 strangers were asked to guess the age and subjectively rank the attractiveness of 49 patients after viewing photos of them either before or after facial plastic surgery.

The bottom-line: Surgical intervention shaved a few years off perceived age but did almost nothing to boost patients? overall attractiveness.

What?s at issue is patients? expectations, said study lead author Dr. Joshua Zimm, an attending surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Institute of North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York City.

?When we?re doing this kind of surgery I?m telling patients that they?ll look fresher, more energetic and less tired, and we have some data in the literature that indicates you will look younger, as we found,? Zimm said. ?But clearly I cannot say that they will look more attractive.?

He emphasized, however, that the findings represent the work of just one surgeon and that the study design had limitations. ?This is not the final word on the subject,? Zimm said.

?But certainly I think you can take away from this that if you?re looking to have aesthetic facial surgery to look younger, we?ve shown that you will,? he said. ?Beyond that ? it is not clear that everyone will definitely look more attractive.?

Zimm and his colleagues discussed their findings in the Aug. 1 online edition of the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

The team focused on clients at a Toronto private-practice facility who had one or more of the following procedures between 2006 and 2010: face lift, neck lift, upper or lower eyelid lift, and brow-lift. The patients ranged from 42 to 73 years old.

Facial photos were taken before surgery and over a six-month follow-up period post-surgery. Makeup and jewelry were banned from the photo sessions, as were additional cosmetic procedures (such as Botox injections or laser skin resurfacing) between the before-and-after photo sessions.

The raters saw either pre-surgery or post-surgery photos of a patient, but never both. Without knowing the purpose of the study, they were asked to estimate the patient?s age and to rate their attractiveness on a scale of 1 to 10. They were given no criteria for determining attractiveness so as not to influence their thinking.

Although patients were deemed to look three years younger on average after plastic surgery, any bump in attractiveness was deemed statistically insignificant.

Zimm took pains to note that the findings do not reflect a real-world context, in which patients? relatives and acquaintances will have a very clear frame of reference for assessing both age and beauty. He also suggested that a much larger study would be needed to nail down the impact of facial plastic surgery.

What?s more, asking raters to assess age and attractiveness at the same time might have created a ?kind of subconscious attractiveness bias,? Zimm said.

Still, ?at the end of the day the goal is to make people happy, so we have to know what?s possible in order to determine if any particular patient is someone I can help,? he said.

But a Chicago plastic surgeon said the study is meaningless in that regard.

?Certainly when I see a new patient I have to decide if what the patient is after is achievable or even realistic,? said Dr. Laurie Casas, a senior clinician educator at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. ?And it?s a very complex process because the perception of beauty has to be evaluated by both the surgeon and the patient.?

The end game is that they want to look more attractive, but this study doesn?t get me anywhere with that process because it?s impossible to make any sense out of the data,? Casas said.

Without a common understanding of what a 1-to-10 attractiveness score actually means, there?s no frame of reference, she said. ?It?s totally subjective, so the results have no meaning,? she said.

Galaxy Note III LTE caught on camera while taking a picture of another phone

note-3-picasa

Well, here?s a lesson for anyone testing out an unannounced phone?s and not wanting anyone to know about it: make sure that phone?s reflection isn?t visible in the very picture it takes! A picture uploaded on Picasa with an SM-N9005 (the LTE model of the Galaxy Note III) shows what is a squarish device, visible through the reflection the glass of another phone caused while the photo was being taken.

Of course, this is by no means the final shape of the Note III, as the actual design is cleverly hidden by Samsung by using cases and making different prototypes, but with such a flurry of leaks that involve the Galaxy Note III, not to mention today?s report that the phone will be unveiled on September 4, we can rest assured that it is certainly Samsung?s next phablet we?re looking at here.

note-3-picasa

The Galaxy Note III is expected to have an octa-core?Exynos 5420/quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor,?3GB of RAM, 1080p display of 5.7-6?, a 13-megapixel camera possibly with optical image stabilization,?LTE-A (LTE-Advanced) connectivity, and?Android 4.3?Jelly Bean with an improved TouchWiz UI.

Tunisian union gives government one week to step down

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's powerful union federation said on Friday that the embattled Islamist-led government had one week to reach a deal for creating a new technocrat government, otherwise it will be "forced to consider" other options.

The 600,000-strong Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) has been trying to mediate between the ruling Ennahda party and the secular opposition, which is demanding the government's ouster as well as the dissolution of a transitional Constituent Assembly that is only weeks away from completing the country's new draft constitution.

Tensions have been rising in Tunisia since the assassination last week of a leftist politician, the second to be slain in six months. Political tensions, along with an outburst of clashes between the army and militants near the Algerian border, risk disrupting the democratic political transition that began after Tunisians toppled an autocratic president in 2011.

The UGTT, seen as being closer to the opposition, has offered a compromise that would put a new technocrat government in place but preserve the Assembly. The transitional body would, however, be put on a sped-up time scale for completing the constitution and the country's new election laws.

"(We) will continue to hold talks and if our demands of changing the government and implementing a time frame for the Constituent Assembly, then we will have other options that we will be forced to consider," the UGTT's deputy leader, Bou Ali Mbarki, told local Nesma TV, without giving further details.

The UGTT is one of the most powerful political and economic forces in Tunisia. A single day of strikes last week cost the country millions of dollars and plunged its currency to a historical low against the dollar.

Despite efforts to reach a deal, both sides appeared to harden their stance on Thursday. They have called for rival "million-man" marches over the weekend.

Ennahda, a moderate Islamist party, has refused to remove the prime minister under any new deal. Opposition figures remain equally recalcitrant about relinquishing their demand to dissolve the Assembly.

Tunisia's successful 2011 uprising set off a wave of revolts across the region. Once upheld as a model of transition among troubled "Arab Spring" states, Tunisia now risks being plunged into political turmoil and broader instability.

Tunisian troops clashed with militants near the Algerian border late on Thursday, the second round of fighting this week.

Two days ago, militants ambushed and killed eight soldiers near the Algerian border, and two improvised bombs have been set off in Tunis, the first time the capital has seen such attacks, although no one was hurt.

Political tensions have also sparked violence since the opposition began mobilizing large protests in several towns.

South of the capital, pro- and anti-government protesters threw rocks at each other and broke into fist fights, wounding three people, a security source said.

(AP) ? National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden left the transit zone of a Moscow airport and officially entered Russia after authorities granted him asylum for a year, his lawyer said Thursday, a move that suggests the Kremlin isn't shying away from further conflict with the United States.

Snowden's whereabouts will be kept a secret for security reasons, lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said, making it even harder to keep track of the former NSA systems analyst, who has been largely hiding out at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23.

The U.S. has demanded that Russia send Snowden home to face prosecution for espionage over his leaks that revealed wide U.S. Internet surveillance practices, but Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the request. In a statement released by WikiLeaks, Snowden thanked Russia and lashed out at the Obama administration.

"Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law, but in the end the law is winning," he said. "I thank the Russian Federation for granting me asylum in accordance with its laws and international obligations."

The move already appears to have further strained tense U.S.-Russian relations amid differences over Syria, U.S. criticism of Russia's human rights record and other disputes. Putin has said his asylum was contingent on him not hurting U.S. interests, but the Kremlin could have interpreted that to exclude documents he had already leaked to newspapers that continue to trickle out.

The White House insisted Snowden isn't a whistleblower or dissident, saying the move to grant him asylum undermines Russia's record of cooperation with the U.S. Spokesman Jay Carney said that the White House is re-evaluating whether a planned fall summit with President Barack Obama and Putin should still go ahead.

In his application for asylum, Snowden said he feared he could face torture or capital punishment if he is returned to the U.S., though the U.S. has promised Russia that is not the case. The U.S. has revoked his passport, and the logistics of him reaching other countries that have offered him asylum, including Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia, are complicated.

"He now is one of the most sought-after men in the world," Kucherena told reporters at the airport. "The issue of security is very important for him."

The Guardian newspaper on Wednesday published a new report on U.S. intelligence-gathering based on information from Snowden, but Kucherena said the material was provided before Snowden promised to stop leaking as a requirement of getting asylum.

The one-year asylum can be extended indefinitely, and Snowden also has the right to seek Russian citizenship. According to the rules set by the Russian government, a person who has temporary asylum would lose it if he travels abroad.

Kucherena said it would be up to Snowden to decide whether to travel to any foreign destination, but added that "he now has no such plans."

Snowden's father said in remarks broadcast Wednesday on Russian television that he would like to visit his son. Kucherena said he is arranging the trip.

WikiLeaks, which has adopted Snowden's cause, said in its statement that legal adviser Sarah Harrison has been with him in the transit zone for 39 days and remains with him. It said only that they left the airport in a taxi and that they are heading to a "secure, confidential place."

The group also praised Russia for providing him shelter.

"We would like to thank the Russian people and all those others who have helped to protect Mr. Snowden," WikiLeaks said on Twitter. "We have won the battle ? now the war."

Kucherena said that Snowden spent little time packing. The lawyer said the fugitive had friends in Russia, including some Americans, who could help ensure his security, but wouldn't elaborate.

"He has got friends, including on Russian territory, American friends, who would be able to ensure his safety for the time being," Kucherena said.

He refused to say whether Snowden would stay in Moscow or move to stay elsewhere in Russia, saying the fugitive would discuss the issue with his family.

Kucherena argued that Russia did the right thing by offering shelter to Snowden despite U.S. pressure. "Russia has fulfilled a humanitarian mission with regard to the U.S. citizen who has found himself in a difficult situation," he said, voicing hope that the U.S. wouldn't try to slam Russia with sanctions.

Putin's foreign affairs aide, Yuri Ushakov, sought Thursday to downplay the impact on relations between the two countries.

"This issue isn't significant enough to have an impact on political relations," he said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies.

But Sen. Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement that the Russian decision to grant asylum to Snowden would hurt ties.

"Edward Snowden is a fugitive who belongs in a United States courtroom, not a free man deserving of asylum in Russia," the Democratic lawmaker said.

Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a veteran of Russia's human rights movement and head of the respected Moscow Helsinki Group, welcomed the news on asylum for Snowden, but added that his quest for freedom of information has landed him in a country that has little respect for that and other freedoms.

"Having fought for the freedom and rights, Snowden has ended up in a country that cracks down on them," Alexeyeva said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Rachel Denber of Human Rights Watch sounded a similar note. "He cannot but be aware of the unprecedented crackdown on human rights that the government has unleashed in the past 15 months," Denber said in an e-mailed comment.

Putin has launched a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent since his inauguration for a third presidential term in May 2012, with the Kremlin-controlled Parliament stamping a series of laws that introduced heavy fines for participants in unsanctioned protests and imposed tough restrictions on non-government organizations.

A law passed in June imposes hefty fines for providing information about the gay community to minors or holding gay pride rallies, a move that has prompted gays in the U.S. and elsewhere to call for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

How did Earth's primitive chemistry get kick started?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]How did life on Earth get started? Three new papers strengthen the case that Earth's first life began at alkaline hydrothermal vents at the bottom of oceans. Scientists are interested in understanding early life on Earth because if we ever hope to find life on other worlds -- especially icy worlds with subsurface oceans such as Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's Enceladus -- we need to know what chemical signatures to look for.

Manning guilty on many charges, not most serious

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning was acquitted of aiding the enemy ? the most serious charge he faced ? but was convicted of espionage, theft and other charges Tuesday, more than three years after he spilled secrets to WikiLeaks.

The judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, deliberated for about 16 hours over three days before reaching her decision in a case that drew worldwide attention as supporters hailed Manning as a whistleblower. The U.S. government called him an anarchist computer hacker and attention-seeking traitor.

Manning stood at attention, flanked by his attorneys, as the judge read her verdicts. He appeared not to react, though his attorney, David Coombs, smiled faintly when he heard not guilty on aiding the enemy, which carried a potential life sentence.

When the judge was done, Coombs put his hand on Manning's back and whispered something to him, eliciting a slight smile on the soldier's face.

Manning was convicted on 20 of 22 charges, including a guilty plea the government accepted in February. He faces up to 136 years in prison. His sentencing hearing begins Wednesday.

Coombs came outside the court to a round of applause and shouts of "thank you" from a few dozen Manning supporters.

"We won the battle, now we need to go win the war," Coombs said of the sentencing phase. "Today is a good day, but Bradley is by no means out of the fire."

Supporters thanked him for his work. One slipped him a private note. Others asked questions about verdicts that they didn't understand.

Manning's court-martial was unusual because he acknowledged giving the anti-secrecy website more than 700,000 battlefield reports and diplomatic cables, and video of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack that killed civilians in Iraq, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

In the footage, airmen laughed and called targets "dead bastards." A military investigation found troops mistook the camera equipment for weapons.

Besides the aiding the enemy acquittal, Manning was also found not guilty of an espionage charge when the judge found prosecutors had not proved their assertion Manning started giving material to WikiLeaks in late 2009. Manning said he started the leaks in February the following year.

Manning pleaded guilty earlier this year to lesser offenses that could have brought him 20 years behind bars, yet the government continued to pursue the more serious charges.

Manning said during a pre-trial hearing in February he leaked the material to expose the U.S military's "bloodlust" and disregard for human life, and what he considered American diplomatic deceit. He said he chose information he believed would not the harm the United States and he wanted to start a debate on military and foreign policy. He did not testify at his court-martial.

Coombs portrayed Manning as a "young, naive but good-intentioned" soldier who was in emotional turmoil, partly because he was a gay service member at a time when homosexuals were barred from serving openly in the U.S. military.

He said Manning could have sold the information or given it directly to the enemy, but he gave it to WikiLeaks in an attempt to "spark reform" and provoke debate. Counterintelligence witnesses valued the Iraq and Afghanistan war logs at about $5.7 million.

Coombs said Manning had no way of knowing whether al-Qaida would access the secret-spilling website and a 2008 counterintelligence report showed the government itself didn't know much about the site.

The defense attorney also mocked the testimony of a former supervisor who said Manning told her the American flag meant nothing to him and she suspected before they deployed to Iraq that Manning was a spy. Coombs noted she had not written up a report on Manning's alleged disloyalty, though had written ones on him taking too many smoke breaks and drinking too much coffee.

The government said Manning had sophisticated security training and broke signed agreements to protect the secrets. He even had to give a presentation on operational security during his training after he got in trouble for posting a YouTube video about what he was learning.

The lead prosecutor, Maj. Ashden Fein, said Manning knew the material would be seen by al-Qaida, a key point prosecutor needed to prove to get an aiding the enemy conviction. Even Osama bin Laden had some of the digital files at his compound when he was killed.

Some of Manning's supporters attended nearly every day of two-month trial, many of them protesting outside the Fort Meade gates each day before the court-martial. They wore T-shirts with the word "truth" on them, blogged, tweeted and raised money for Manning's defense. One supporter was banned from the trial because the judge said he made online threats.

Hours before the verdict, about two dozen demonstrators gathered outside the gates of the military post, proclaiming their admiration for Manning.

"He wasn't trying to aid the enemy. He was trying to give people the information they need so they can hold their government accountable," said Barbara Bridges, of Baltimore.

At a press conference Tuesday, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange blasted the verdict, calling it "a dangerous precedent and an example of national security extremism."

"This has never been a fair trial," Assange told journalists gathered at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

The court-martial unfolded as another low-level intelligence worker, Edward Snowden, revealed U.S. secrets about surveillance programs. Snowden, a civilian employee, told The Guardian his motives were similar to Manning's, but he said his leaks were more selective.

Manning's supporters believed a conviction for aiding the enemy would have a chilling effect on leakers who want to expose wrongdoing by giving information to websites and the media.

Before Snowden, Manning's case was the most high-profile espionage prosecution for the Obama administration, which has been criticized for its crackdown on leakers.

The WikiLeaks case is by far the most voluminous release of classified material in U.S. history. Manning's supporters included Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg, who in the early 1970s spilled a secret Defense Department history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

The 7,000 pages of the Pentagon Papers showed that the U.S. government repeatedly misled the public about the Vietnam War.

Ellsberg said Tuesday that Manning's acquittal on aiding the enemy was more significant than his convictions on the other counts. He said a conviction would mean that most people wouldn't want to risk life imprisonment, or even execution ? a permissible penalty under the law ? for exposing government secrets.

"American democracy just dodged a bullet, a possibly fatal bullet," Ellsberg said. "I'm talking about the free press that I think is the life's blood of the democracy."

He said the free press is still under attack, though, by the Obama administration's aggressive prosecution of leakers.

The material WikiLeaks began publishing in 2010 documented complaints of abuses against Iraqi detainees, a U.S. tally of civilian deaths in Iraq, and America's weak support for the government of Tunisia ? a disclosure that Manning supporters said helped trigger the Middle Eastern pro-democracy uprisings known as the Arab Spring.

The Obama administration said the release threatened to expose valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America's relations with other governments.

Prosecutors said during the trial Manning relied on WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange for guidance on what secrets to "harvest" for the organization, starting within weeks of his arrival in Iraq in late 2009.

Federal authorities are looking into whether Assange can be prosecuted. He has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex-crimes allegations.

Natural Affinities of RNA Components Could Have Led To Life

[unable to retrieve full-text content]vinces99 writes "The chemical components crucial to the start of life on Earth may have primed and protected each other in never-before-realized ways, according to new research led by University of Washington scientists. That could mean a simpler scenario for how that first spark of life on the planet came about. Scientists have long thought that life started when the right combination of bases and sugars produced self-replicating ribonucleic acid, or RNA, inside a rudimentary 'cell' composed of fatty acids. Under the right conditions, fatty acids naturally form into bag-like structures similar to today's cell membranes. In testing one of the fatty acids representative of those found before life began – decanoic acid – the scientists discovered that the four bases in RNA bound more readily to the decanoic acid than did the other seven bases tested. By concentrating more of the bases and sugar that are the building blocks of RNA, the system would have been primed for the next steps, reactions that led to RNA inside a bag."

(AP) ? Japan's industrial output fell in June for the first time in five months, the government said Tuesday as it released data highlighting the fragility of the recovery in the world's No. 3 economy.

Manufacturing slipped 3.3 percent from the month before in June and was 4.8 percent lower than a year before, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.

Such indicators suggest weaker growth in China may be sapping some of the momentum from the recovery.

However, other data showed the jobless rate edging down to 3.9 percent, its lowest level since October 2008, when the economy was slammed by the global financial crisis. The jobless rate had remained at 4.1 percent during the previous few months.

The most recent data have officials questioning whether the government should go ahead with a promised sales tax increase that economists say could derail progress in restoring growth and breaking free of deflation.

The central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Monday he believes the recovery is strong enough to weather a tax hike, which is needed to help redress ballooning deficits that have taken Japan's national debt to record high levels.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has claimed progress with his "Abenomics" strategy of fighting deflation with aggressive monetary easing and higher government spending. But he has indicated he may consider amending the plan for a 3 percentage point increase in the tax next that is slated for April.

Figures released earlier this month showed consumer prices rising 0.4 percent in June, but core inflation which excludes food and energy prices remained negative. Costs for food and energy have largely been pushed higher by the sharp weakening of the Japanese yen, which drives up costs for imported food and energy in this resource-scarce nation.

Prices for desktop computers, imported ground meat and canned fish rose, along with electricity and gas rates. The rise in food prices extends across many categories, from jam to chicken powder, bread to salad dressing.

But prices for many other consumer goods, such as DVD players and digital cameras, have continued to fall.

Fresh from a victory for his Liberal Democratic Party in upper house parliamentary elections, Abe has acknowledged that despite signs of improvement, many Japanese have yet to feel a boost from his policies. He has vowed to press ahead with deeper and more fundamental economic reforms intended to help restore Japan's competitiveness.

A key factor will be whether companies begin to invest more and raise wages, to help drive a recovery in consumer demand that accounts for most of Japan's economic growth.

While sales are up by double digits at Tokyo's toniest department stores, overall retail sales fell in June from the month before, with surveys showing consumer spending is slowing, Marcel Thieliant, an economist for Capital Economics, said in a report Monday.

"Looking ahead, there are a number of reasons to doubt that the recent strong run of consumer spending can continue," he said. The 70 trillion yen ($716 billion) increase in household wealth due to the stock market rally earlier in the year accounts for only a small part of overall household wealth, he said.

"With inflation now rising, income growth has to pick up as well for households to maintain their spending power," he said. "The overwhelming majority of households views inflation as negative, and may rein in spending in response."

New York Mets (46-55) at Washington Nationals (51-54), 1:35 p.m. (ET)

A pair of young promising pitchers meet this afternoon when Carlos Torres leads the New York Mets against Taylor Jordan and the Washington Nationals in the finale of a four-game series at Nationals Park.

Torres hasn't lost either of his two starts this season for the Mets. The 20- year-old right-hander will try to follow a solid performance against Atlanta on Tuesday when he limited the Braves to a run over six innings in a 4-1 triumph.

Torres started his time with the Mets this season with 10 consecutive relief efforts, but he was thrown into what is now a six-man rotation so the team can limit the innings pitched by Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler for the long haul this year. This will mark his first career start against the Nationals.

Jordan has yet to win in five career big league starts. The 24-year-old righty is coming off a 5-1 loss to the Pirates on Tuesday. He allowed nine hits and five runs -- four earned -- over 7 2/3 innings.

Jordan's major league debut came against the Mets at Citi Field on June 29 when he suffered a 5-1 defeat. Jordan yielded five hits and three runs -- one earned -- over 4 1/3 frames.

After losing 11-0 Friday afternoon in the first portion of a doubleheader, the Nationals have held the Mets to a run in each of the last two games, both victories.

On Saturday, Ian Desmond and Denard Span smacked back-to-back home runs in the second to back a solid start from Dan Haren in a 4-1 final.

Bryce Harper added a two-run homer in the third to provide more than run support for Haren (5-11), who held the Mets to one run on three hits while striking out six over seven frames to snap a lengthy 11-start winless skid.

Haren, who hadn't won since May 9, added a double and a run scored in the victory, Washington's third in its last four games.

"It feels great," Haren said of snapping his skid. "It's obviously been a long time to have that winning feeling after a game."

New York starter Dillon Gee (7-8) entered the contest looking to extend his six-start unbeaten streak, but was tagged for four runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- over seven innings to absorb the loss.

"They're a very good team with really good hitters and they're going to make you pay when you make mistakes like that," Gee said of the Nats. "The damage was done early and there's nothing I can do about it."

David Wright recorded two of New York's four hits and knocked in the lone run.

Washington leads the season series, 6-5.
