Bulgaria, Romania Vow to Strengthen Military Ties :: Balkan Insight

Bulgarian Defense Minister Anyu Angelov and his Romanian counterpart Corneliu Dobritoiu were in Sofia for the signing of a bilateral agreement under NATO's Air Policing program.

"The uniting of the efforts of Bulgaria and Romania for various joint projects would contribute not only to the development of their armed forces but also to the achievement of greater security and stability in our region, a greater impulse in regional cooperation, and, last but not least, greater global security," Bulgarian Defense Minister Angelov said on Tuesday.

Angelov and Dobritoiu said the two Balkan countries plan to expand their Defense Cooperation Plan by increasing the number of international military exercises in which forces from Bulgaria, Romania, and the U.S. participate.

The two ministers discussed other opportunities for cooperation, including joint drills in counter-terrorism and military police activities and joint logistics for military transport planes used by the air forces of Bulgaria and Romania.

Angelov and Dobritoiu also emphasized the role of NATO and the EU in the strengthening of their countries' bilateral defense cooperation.

Bulgaria, Romania, and the U.S. have boosted their military cooperation in recent years under the so-called Task Force East (formerly known as Joint Task Force East).
