The top NFL trade targets

The NFL draft breeds player movement. And not just in terms of rookie picks.

Player personnel executives around the league are currently tweaking rosters to be as least position-needy as possible entering the draft. That way, clubs set themselves up to select the "best players available." By May 1, rosters must be readied for the heart of OTA season.

Veteran player trades were disallowed leading up to and during last year's lockout-affected draft, but in 2010 we saw a whopping 18 trades in the month of April. 24 vets were involved, including Donovan McNabb, Brandon Marshall, Santonio Holmes, Leon Washington, Ted Ginn, Tony Scheffler, and Jason Campbell.

April is the most trade-happy month on the NFL calendar.

Here's an in-depth look at ten pre-draft trade candidates, with some more listed at the end.

1. Bears running back Matt Forte

Forte has done his best to make the organization look bad in repeated ESPN appearances, complaining about his contract status. He was particularly displeased with the Bears' signing of Michael Bush, even though shared rushing attempts could actually work to prolong Forte's career.

Forte is a good back. New GM Phil Emery knows it, or else he wouldn't have slapped Forte with the franchise tag. But the Bears now have a starting-caliber replacement, and can find another on day two of the draft. On the trade market, Forte could fetch a second-round pick and then some.

Prediction: Traded to New England for second- and sixth-round picks.

2. Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel

Samuel is still playing at a very high level, but he no longer fits the Eagles' defensive philosophy. He'll also be difficult to trade going on age 31 with a $9.9 million base salary. In all likelihood, Samuel will have to agree to a reworked contract in order to expedite his way out of Philadelphia.

The Lions nearly traded for Samuel late last summer, offering two second-day draft picks in a deal Eagles GM Howie Roseman nixed at the last minute. Detroit is in no better shape at corner than it was at this time last year. It's pretty safe to assume the sides will rekindle talks before the draft.

Prediction: Traded to Detroit for a conditional fourth-round pick.

3. Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney

Freeney has been unwilling to move from end to outside linebacker in new coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 scheme. The Colts figured that out early, and began "fielding calls" in February to gauge interest around the league. Due to Freeney's age (32) and exorbitant salary ($14M), they found no takers.

GM Ryan Grigson was adamant at this week's Owners Meetings that Freeney is now part of the team's 2012 plans. "He's a Colt. Period," Grigson said. That could change quickly, of course, if a team believes it's one pass rusher away from a Super Bowl. Like Samuel, Freeney would have to redo his deal in order to make a trade work. The Colts do have plenty of cap space to keep him.

Prediction: Stays with Indianapolis.

4. Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart

Carolina's combined $52 million investments in DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert don't make Stewart the odd man out, per se, but they certainly raise the question of whether Stewart will be a Panther beyond 2013. (He may not make it that long.) Stewart's rookie contract is up after this season, and Carolina isn't going to be able to keep paying all three backs. With Stewart coming off an impressive year (career-high 5.36 YPC, 47 catches) it's time to strike while the iron is hot.

Though he's in a contract season, an acquiring team won't have to commit top dollar to Stewart because it can slap him with the franchise tag in 2013. Based on 2012 tender numbers, a team could get Stewart's age-25 and 26 seasons for what essentially amounts to a two-year, $9.053 million commitment. As a premium talent, Stewart is well worth that money in a keep-and-tag scenario.

Prediction: Traded to Denver for a second-round pick.

As a premium talent, Stewart is well worth that money in a keep-and-tag scenario.

Prediction: Traded to Denver for a second-round pick.

5. Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck

The Titans know they can do better than the fading Hasselbeck, who in the latter stages of 2011 more closely resembled a late-career Mark Brunell than his three-time Pro Bowl old self. Tennessee swung and missed on Peyton Manning, but the organization clearly wants more at quarterback.

If the Titans are smart, they'll know 2011 first-round pick Jake Locker is ready to start and will run circles around Hasselbeck in training camp. The club remains high on Rusty Smith as a potential long-term backup. Clearing Hasselbeck's $5.5 million salary off the books wouldn't hurt, either. A phone call to old Hasselbeck pal Mike Holmgren in Cleveland may be all it takes to turn the page.

Prediction: Traded to Cleveland for a fifth-round pick.

6. Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers

The ninth pick in the 2008 draft, Rivers has been a testament to the increasingly popular notion that non-rush linebackers shouldn't be drafted so high. Rivers is a fine run defender, but he hasn't come close to living up to his draft status. He also missed all of last season with a wrist condition.

The medical will be key because Rivers recovered far more slowly than anticipated, and the wrist injury has been called "degenerative." Rivers is in a contract season, however, and the Bengals probably won't be signing him long term. He's not even projected for the starting lineup this year.

Prediction: Traded to Miami for a fifth-round pick.

7. Patriots quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett

Hoyer lacks arm strength, and Mallett is short on mobility. At ages 26 and 24, however, they are tantalizing young prospects after learning under Tom Brady. Neither has a particularly prohibitive base salary. Hoyer draws high marks for intangible traits, and Mallett can sling it a country mile.

Teams likely still view Hoyer's talent as unremarkable, and will wait until he hits the 2013 market before overspending. Mallett is the more intriguing trade target, though the Patriots probably won't part with him for less than a second-round pick after Mallett cost them a third-rounder in 2011.

Prediction: Both stay in New England.

8. Texans running back Ben Tate

Tate is a logical trade candidate in that the player ahead of him on the depth chart just re-signed for $43 million over five seasons, and Houston's zone-blocking scheme can render running back a replaceable position. Tate is a beastly tackle breaker with underrated skills in the passing game. He's cheap and not yet 24, and those characteristics make Tate very enticing on the trade market.

They may bite if an unrefusable offer comes along, but the Texans' best option is to keep Tate for one more season. He's low-cost, starter-quality talent in one of the NFL's run-heaviest offenses. The club should be more amenable to trade offers next offseason, when Tate enters a contract year.

Prediction: Stays in Houston.

9. Jets linebacker Bart Scott

New York Newsday reported in early January that Scott would not be back with the Jets, and the team granted him permission to seek a trade just before February's Scouting Combine. It's not difficult to see why they've found no takers, however. Scott is a two-down inside linebacker going on age 32. His $4.2 million salary is both hefty and fully guaranteed for the 2012 season.

Coach Rex Ryan now claims the Jets plan to keep Scott, but that could be an issue either of Ryan lacking foresight, or a leverage play by the organization. Teams will have interest in Scott if he's released. They just aren't going to take on his contract. The Jets have a tough decision ahead.

Prediction: Released after the draft.

10. Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin

McKelvin was the 11th pick in the 2008 draft, so he's a holdover from an old Bills regime. And McKelvin hasn't played remotely well enough to earn a spot in GM Buddy Nix and coach Chan Gailey's long-term plans. McKelvin is entering the final year on his rookie deal. He's not getting an extension and won't be a 2012 starter, so it makes the most sense for Buffalo to move him now.

McKelvin still has talent and youth (26) on his side. Dick Jauron was Bills coach when McKelvin was drafted, and now runs the defense in Cleveland. A move like this could make the Browns more comfortable bypassing Morris Claiborne in favor of offense at the No. 4 pick. The Browns have 13 draft choices after compensatory picks were distributed, so they'll be open to wheeling and dealing. McKelvin is a right corner by nature, and a logical fit opposite LCB Joe Haden.

Prediction: Traded to Cleveland for a sixth-round pick.

More Trade Candidates: Giants DE Osi Umenyiora, Bucs TE Kellen Winslow, Chiefs DL Glenn Dorsey, Rams WR Danny Amendola, Raiders WR Louis Murphy, Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno, Eagles DE Darryl Tapp, Lions DT Sammie Lee Hill, Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen, Saints RB Chris Ivory, Dolphins DE Phillip Merling, Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi, Colts DE Jerry Hughes, Lions CB Alphonso Smith, Panthers RB Mike Goodson, Titans LB Gerald McRath, Dolphins LB Koa Misi, Patriots DT Ron Brace, Jets RT Wayne Hunter, Bengals DE Robert Geathers, Bucs WR Arrelious Benn, Texans SS Glover Quin, Seahawks WR Deon Butler.

Dealtalk: What will be the next Instagram?

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook's willingness to pay $1 billion to buy the 12-person start-up Instagram has Silicon Valley venture capitalists happily re-doing their math on the potential value of hot young companies.

The fact that Facebook was the buyer is itself seen as a big plus for the valuation of startups that may be adding subscribers rapidly but in some cases are still far from being profitable or ready for the public markets.

Until now, "it's really just been Google ," said Jeremy Liew, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners who backs LivingSocial and others. "You really can't get an auction with only one bidder."

The price paid for Instagram, a company with no revenue, will also make it easier for potential acquirers to justify spending big for something perceived as strategic, according to Jeff Clavier, managing partner at SoftTech VC.

Some venture capitalists think Instagram was a one-off. "It's certainly an outlier from a valuation standpoint," said Matt Murphy, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers who manages its $200 million iFund. "There was a big strategic concern or threat there" for Facebook, he said.

Investors also caution that the dynamics that enable so-called Web 2.0 companies like Instagram to gain huge numbers of customers very quickly can also cut the other way.

One need only look at Highlight, a location-based social application for iPhones that was all the rage early last month and is now almost forgotten, or even Turntablefm, which lets far-flung friends listen to music together and has lost buzz after acclaim last summer.

Still, companies with certain characteristics -- massive growth in users or a competitive edge in mobile applications, for example -- could be in the hunt for a 10-figure payday. Here are some of the hottest prospects:

PINTEREST

WHAT IT IS: A virtual pinboard that lets people easily assemble pictures and other bits of content online. Users follow each other, Twitter-style, and comment on each others' pins, which can include anything from hot cars to vacation destinations. The nature of the content makes it e-commerce-friendly, and tremendous growth over the past six months puts it at the heart of the social networking revolution.

"If anyone wanted to make a counter-statement to Facebook, Pinterest would be a good way," said Clavier, who is not an investor in the site.

FUNDING TO DATE: $37.5 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners and others.

An investor told BusinessInsider last month the company was now worth $1 billion, up from the $200 million valuation it claimed in October at its last funding round.

KEY FACT: User base has grown to 19 million from 2 million in just six months, according to comScore Inc.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: Founders Paul Sciarra and Ben Silbermann met at Yale. Half the 200 emails Silbermann sent to his friends asking them to join Pinterest at its launch went unopened.

TUMBLR

WHAT IT IS: A blogging service that allows for mixed media posts, such as pictures with short captions.

"It's in the same space as Pinterest," said John Lilly of Greylock Partners, who worked on the $50 million funding round that Instagram wrapped up just before its sale to Facebook. "But it's significantly bigger than Pinterest is on almost every single metric."

FUNDING TO DATE: $125 million from Greylock, Sequoia and others.

In September 2011, Tumblr was valued at $800 million.

KEY FACT: High level of engagement, with users creating 14 original posts each month on average, Tumblr says.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: Founder David Karp, doing Harvard drop-outs like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg one better, quit the Bronx High School of Science at age 15. Spark Capital and Union Square Capital were two of Tumblr's earliest investors, as they were at Twitter.

EVERNOTE

WHAT IT IS: Software that lets users take notes -- including written text, copies of web pages, or photos -- and then access and search them from anywhere, including phones.

Evernote would make a good acquisition for a company that needs to bolster its cloud capabilities, such as Hewlett Packard Co , said a venture capitalist who did not invest in Evernote but wishes he had.

FUNDING TO DATE: More than $95 million from DoCoMo Capital, Sequoia Capital and others.

Around the time of its funding round last summer, the speculation was that Evernote would join the $1 billion valuation club, but according to TechCrunch it did not quite make it.

KEY FACT: 26 million users.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: The research team is led by Stepan Pachikov, who once worked on the handwriting-recognition technology in the Apple Newton. Internet maven Esther Dyson and PayPal cofounder Max Levchin have sat on the board since 2006.

DROPBOX

WHAT IT IS: A service that allows users to store and share files easily online.

Like Evernote, Dropbox could be a good acquisition for a company that has fallen behind in cloud-based services, but it would be a lot more expensive.

FUNDING TO DATE: $257 million from Index Ventures, Greylock Partners, Sequoia Capital and others.

Dropbox's last funding round in October valued the company at around $4 billion, according to media reports.

KEY FACT: 1 billion files are saved every 3 days on the service, the company says.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: Co-founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi both attended MIT; Ferdowsi dropped out.

PINGER

WHAT IT IS: A free text and talk service that operates independently of wireless carriers. The service provides a telephone number when you sign up to make phone calls; the number can connect to public telephone networks.

Pinger works across platforms, including Apple Inc's iOS and Google's Android. A disruptive technology in the telecom sector, Pinger could be an attractive buy for a major carrier such as AT&T or Verizon .

FUNDING TO DATE: $19 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, DAG Ventures and Deutsche Telekom.

At its last funding round earlier this year, the company did not disclose a valuation.

KEY FACT: One of the top five installed apps on Apple's iOS platform.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: CEO Greg Woock used to work for the Virgin Group's Sir Richard Branson; a representative from T-Venture, Deutsche Telekom's venture-capital arm, sits on Pinger's board.

SPOTIFY

WHAT IT IS: An online music service that was launched in Europe before coming to the United States. Spotify offers free accounts that allow users to play specific songs -- unlike other music services that only allow users to pick stations or genres -- as well as premium subscriptions.

Some are disappointed in Spotify's sales of premium subscription, but others say value lies in its reach. Amazon.com or Google could be potential acquirers.

FUNDING TO DATE: $189 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Accel Partners and others.

Spotify is raising money now at a valuation of more than $3 billion, according to media reports.

KEY FACTS: 7.5 million U.S. visitors just a year after its U.S. launch, according to comScore. Partnered with Facebook for a streaming music service.

WHO ARE THESE GUYS: CEO Daniel Ek founded his first company at age 14, building websites for small businesses. He and co-founder Martin Lorentzon built up Spotify from their native Sweden. Sean Parker, the Silicon Valley consigliere who guided Facebook and co-founded Napster, has played an active role and sits on the board.

Obama-Romney showdown starts off with a harsh tone

(AP) ? The 2012 presidential general election has begun. It won't be pretty.

Tuesday marked Day One, in essence, of the contest between the two virtually certain nominees, Republican Mitt Romney and Democratic President Barack Obama. Rick Santorum's departure removed the last meaningful bump from Romney's path to the GOP nomination. Romney and Obama wasted no time in portraying the voters' choice in dire, sometimes starkly personal terms.

"The campaign started yesterday, the general election campaign," Romney said Wednesday on Fox News when pressed on how he would counter continued Democratic attacks that he is an out-of-touch rich guy. "It's a little early in the process."

With Obama saddled with a still-ailing economy and a divisive health care law, and Romney riding a wave of blistering TV ads, the fall election is unlikely to dwell on "hope," ''change" and other uplifting themes from four years ago. Much of the nation's ire then was aimed at departing President George W. Bush, and Obama had no extensive record to defend.

The landscape is much different now. Voters face nearly seven months of hard-hitting jabs and counterpunches between the two parties' standard-bearers.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor making his second presidential bid, now has to unify his party, build out a general election campaign and start answering big questions like who he will choose as a running mate. He insisted Wednesday that conservatives will unite behind him and said he believes Santorum will campaign with him against Obama. He also suggested he is considering one of his formal rivals for the presidential ticket.

"There's a large number of people in the Republican party who are extraordinary leaders, including some of those who have run in this last contest with me, and so we'll go through that list and decide who could potentially become a president if that were necessary," he told Fox News.

The presumptive nominee attacked Obama with gusto Tuesday in his two public events that followed Santorum's surprising announcement.

Campaigning in Pennsylvania, where an April 24 GOP primary is suddenly less important than its likely role as a battleground state this fall, Romney portrayed Obama as a weak leader who apologizes for America's greatness and prefers European-style socialism over robust free enterprise. Obama's allies call such claims nonsense.

"The right course for America is not to divide America," Romney told a GOP dinner gathering in Mendenhall, near Philadelphia. "That's what he's doing," he said of Obama. "His campaign is all about finding Americans to blame and attack, and find someone to tax more, someone who isn't giving, isn't paying their fair share."

He said Obama prefers "a government-centered society."

Obama, campaigning in Florida, said the choice in November will be as stark as in the 1964 contest between Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater, which resulted in one of the biggest Democratic landslides ever. That election included dramatic and controversial moments, such as Goldwater's defense of "extremism in the defense of liberty" and a devastating TV ad suggesting a Goldwater presidency would lead to nuclear war.

Obama didn't mention Romney by name. His top aides have shown less restraint, however.

The Obama campaign posted a YouTube video on Wednesday, the day after Santorum's withdrawal, noting that "as Republicans settle on a nominee," there are things voters should remember about the Romney campaign.

The presentation proceeds with video clips of a slew of Romney statements, including his pledge to see the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortions overturned, his statement that he'd rather see Detroit go bankrupt before backing a government bailout, his assertion that "corporations are people, my friend," and his declaration that he was an "extremely serious conservative" governor of Massachusetts.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a statement after Santorum's withdrawal: "It's no surprise that Mitt Romney finally was able to grind down his opponents under an avalanche of negative ads. But neither he nor his special interest allies will be able to buy the presidency with their negative attacks. The more the American people see of Mitt Romney, the less they like him."

Other Obama campaign officials have mocked Romney's wealth and called him out of touch with average Americans.

Romney and his allies, including a potent super political action committee, have proved their ability to raise millions of dollars to air brutally effective attack ads, which crippled Santorum and Newt Gingrich in the GOP primary contests. Obama will raise many millions, too, and few doubt that he will hit Romney hard.

The Republican super PAC Crossroads GPS is already on the air attacking Obama in six critical swing states. The group is spending $1.7 million to attack the president's energy record for a week in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

On Tuesday, Romney made clear that he will go after Obama's character as well as his record. In speeches in Mendenhall and Wilmington, Del., Romney said Obama isn't merely inept at economic policy, he actively dislikes business.

Obama "is clearly trying to hide from us what he intends to do," Romney said in Wilmington. "He's going to hide. And it's my job to seek."

Romney made similar remarks last month. Now, with Santorum off the stage and Gingrich and Ron Paul hardly a factor, there are no intra-party distractions to dilute such comments. Romney and Obama are fully engaged, one on one, at a much earlier stage than in 2008, when Obama had to parry Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton throughout the summer before fully turning to Republican John McCain.

Even then, Bush's unpopularity helped fuel Obama's campaign and deflected some of the anti-GOP sentiment away from the actual nominee.

This time, the incumbent president is on the ballot, with unemployment above 8 percent. The tea party, which didn't exist in 2008, is a potent and unpredictable force.

And Romney suddenly is free of meaningful primary worries. That leaves him able to focus the full force of his fundraising and campaigning skills against Obama.

Feliz shines in first start for Rangers

By SCHUYLER DIXON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:02 p.m. ET April 10, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - This time, Neftali Feliz watched new closer Joe Nathan finish the job.

Pitching for the first time since blowing a save in Game 6 of the World Series, Feliz threw seven crisp innings in his first major league start to lead the Texas Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Feliz, who outdueled hometown product Blake Beavan in his first trip to the mound where always dreamed of pitching, smiled widely as he accepted congratulations after Nathan's perfect ninth.

It was a much different scene than the last time Feliz was on the mound in a meaningful game. The right-hander buried his head in his hands in St. Louis after allowing a two-run triple that tied Game 6 when the Rangers were a strike away from winning the championship. The Cardinals won the World Series in seven games.

"It's a dream come true for me," Feliz said. "I was hoping for the moment to become a starter in the major leagues and finally it happened. And I thank the Rangers for making that happen. And here I am."

The Rangers could celebrate thanks to David Murphy, who had three of their seven hits and drove in the only run with an infield single in the second inning.

"Murphy swung the bat extremely well and the pitching and defense held it up," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Feliz didn't have a strikeout after the fifth inning, and relied heavily on off-speed pitches instead of the 100-mph heat he used to get 72 saves over two seasons.

Seattle had two runners on with two out in the seventh, but Feliz (1-0) got out of it when Miguel Olivo hit a comebacker to the mound. Feliz bobbled the weak grounder and recovered just in time to beat Olivo's headfirst slide at first.

Mike Adams and Nathan took over from there, closing out the four-hitter.

"I know we have a good bullpen," Feliz said.

Feliz was a shade better than Beavan (0-1), who was pitching for the first time in the ballpark where he grew up watching the Rangers.

A former first-round pick by the Rangers who went to Seattle in the Cliff Lee deal two years ago, Beavan allowed six hits in 6 1-3 innings and pitched out of trouble in the fifth and sixth. The Dallas-area high school product left with runners at first and second, but Tom Wilhelmsen escaped the jam.

He battled nerves all day as he prepared to pitch in front of family and friends.

"All day my stomach was queasy, so I could tell it wasn't any other game for me," Beavan said. "It's something I dreamed about doing ever since I was a little kid watching these games was pitching on that mound."

Like Yu Darvish a night earlier, Feliz let two of the first three hitters reach base - both on walks - but settled down much more quickly than the Japanese sensation.

Starting with a double play, Feliz retired nine consecutive batters before allowing his first hit in 59 at-bats over 19 2-3 career innings against Seattle, a two-out single by former Ranger Justin Smoak in the fourth.

Smoak singled again to start the seventh, and Jesus Montero had a one-out single to give Seattle its best threat. Smoak was on third when Olivo hit his dribbler back to Feliz.

Texas grabbed the lead in the second. Adrian Beltre led off with a double but was caught between second and third on a grounder back to Beavan. He stayed in the rundown long enough for Michael Young to get to second. Young then moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Murphy's infield hit.

"You don't see too many 1-0 games in this ballpark," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "Both pitchers were outstanding."

NOTES: Wedge benched SS Brendan Ryan for a game, saying it was over issues of "accountability." He didn't specify, but did say it wasn't solely because of an errant throw on a double-play ball that sparked the Texas rally that bailed out Darvish in his debut. Munenori Kawasaki started in Ryan's place. ... Montero was back in the Mariners' lineup as the DH after missing a game with a stomach ailment. ... Darvish and Feliz became the first back-to-back Texas pitchers to make their first major league start since Matt Harrison and Warner Madrigal did it in July 2008. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Darvish was the first pitcher in more than 100 years to win his major league debut after allowing at least four runs in the first inning.

Inflammation and Cancer | www.dailyrx.com

The link between inflammation and cancer has been used to advertise everything from fish oil to aspirin, but the science behind it can be murky. Some new research may show the mechanism behind the link.

A group of researchers found the molecular machinery that makes the proteins in inflammatory states that can lead toward leukemia and lymphomas, types of blood cancers.

The study showed that the part of the cell that makes proteins, a part called the ribosome, becomes defective before the cancer develops.

Ask your doctor about anti-inflammatory therapies.

In research presented at the American Association of Cancer Research's Annual Meeting, scientists from the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia believe that the ribosomal protein L22 was mutated or deleted in nine percent of a group of leukemia patients.

This study suggests that its absence may play a role in cancer development. That ribosomal protein has been linked to abnormalities in T cell development, also highlighting the complicated role of the immune system in fighting cancer.

"These findings help explain how mutations in one class of proteins can trigger the development of cancer," says Shuyun Rao, Ph.D., co-author on the study. "If we find a way to block the pathway activated by these mutations, this may cause tumors to regress."

The research was tested in genetic variations of mice. In groups without the L22 gene, lymphomas occurred more often and grew faster.

In human cells where the gene had been deactivated, early stages of lymphoma development were observed in an inflammatory pathway which has been frequently associated with cancer development.

The research concluded that L22?may be involved in other cancers beyond leukemias.

The research was presented at the American Association of Cancer Research's April 2nd meeting. Until subsequent publication in a peer reviewed journal, findings should be considered preliminary.

No financial conflicts of interest were disclosed with the research.

Leukemia

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, there are over 245,000 people in the United States living with some form of leukemia, and over 44,000 new cases will be diagnosed each year. Among children with cancer, one out of every three will have some form of leukemia. However, over 90% of all cases of leukemia occur in adults.

Leukemia broadly defines a number of different cancers that originate in the bone marrow and blood cell lines, and typically produces an abnormal increase in the number of white blood cells in the body. Leukemias are subdivided into whether they are acute (occur rapidly) or chronic (develop over many years) and then further subdivided into what type of blood cell they start from, lymphocytic (usually from white blood cells that fight infection, like B-cells) or myelogenous (arising from cells in the bone marrow that eventually produce red blood cells). These categories make up the four most common types of leukemia:

  • Acute Lymphoblastic (ALL): Affects adults over age 65 (50% survival); also the most common form of leukemia in children (85% survival)
  • Chronic Lymphocytic (CLL): Affects mostly men over age 55 (75% survival)
  • Acute Myelogenous (AML): Affects mostly adult men (40% survival)
  • Chronic Myelogenous (CML): Affects mainly adults (90% survival)

?

Each of these general forms of leukemia is further subdivided into the type of cell that is affected, and treatments differ based on what the root cause is. There are also other types of leukemia that do not generally fit into any of these categories, such as Hairy cell leukemia, Adult T-cell leukemia, and T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia, an extremely rare and aggressive cancer.

There is no single cause for all the different types of leukemia. Research has shown that there is a predisposition for certain leukemias to run in families. Environmental factors such as exposure to the chemical benzene as well as other petrochemicals have been linked as well. People who have received certain types of chemotherapy (alkylating agents; and topoisomerase inhibitors) and people exposed to large amounts of radiation are also at greater risk. While not a direct risk factor, cigarette smoking has been linked to an increased risk of developing leukemia.

Symptoms of leukemia can be similar to those of other less serious diseases, and patients will have the disease discovered with blood testing and pathological examination of the blood cells. Common symptoms include fevers and night sweats, feeling fatigue and weakness, bleeding and bruising easily, frequent infections (from non-functioning immune cells), unexplained weight loss, and pain in the bones and joints. Some patients may notice swollen lymph nodes in the armpits or neck that are painless when touched.

Treatment is dependent on the type of leukemia, as certain forms are responsive to specific chemotherapies and radiation treatments, while others may not be. Newer therapies such as targeted therapy and biologic agents are being used more frequently as well. Some forms of leukemia are treated with a bone marrow transplant, which entails replacing the entire blood cell producing system. Acute leukemias are life-threatening, so they are immediately and aggressively treated, while chronic leukemias may not require treatment for several years.

Finding the Best Estate Planning Attorney for Your Family | Finance ...

Few things are more important

to the success of your estate plan than the attorney you choose to design and draft it. Almost as important is the relationship that is formed between that attorney and other professional advisors who serve you in the areas of financial and accounting advice.

All successful estate planning is the result of several professions working together for the good of the client. However, one group of professionals sometimes have misconceptions of professionals belonging to other groups. For example, the financial advisor may see the estate planning attorney as little more than a scrivener document. But this is far from the truth. Many attorneys who limit their practice to estate planning are values-based, relationship-driven, client-centered and counseling-oriented. And the good ones are willing to work together with other professionals on your behalf. They understand that thorough estate planning Involves more than just legal advice. The key is to find those attorneys who meet this description. So do you find where these rare creatures? How do you know if you?re dealing with the right kind of attorney? The right kind of attorney will have to orientation toward relationship-building and counseling rather than mere document preparation. The first thing he or she wants to offer is the ability to listen carefully to not only your goals ? but also your hopes, dreams, and aspirations for yourself and your loved ones. The attorney wants to carry on a dialogue that will enable you sensitive to make clear your wishes to maintain control over your affairs, to be cared for properly in the event of a disability and to Provide for your loved ones Meaningfully after you are gone.

It?s About More Than Just Taxes

Any competent estate planning attorney can help you navigate the legal intricacies and tax laws that pertain to the passing of wealth. But the right kind of estate planning attorney will also be interested in your desire to pass along more than just money. He or she will ask about and explain how to accomplish things as seeking:

ofunding the education of offspring for several generations

omeeting philanthropic goals that will leave a legacy for your community

opreserving family history and stories that support the values ??you believe in

ocontinuing or divesting a family business

surviving spouse for a ocaring regardless of circumstances

oand much more

On a less positive, but equally important note, the right kind of attorney will ask about seeking things as:.

othe complexities of the family relationships that may exist due to second marriage situations

othe special health needs of a grandchild

othe son-in-law or daughter who is not to be trusted

othe child or grandchild who is a spendthrift or suffers from substance abuse

search in-depth counseling forms a strong foundation on Which a long-term relationship is built. That relationship is important because an estate plan is not a transaction. Rather, it?s an ongoing process that should be reviewed from time to time throughout your life ? and potentially survives through several generations. You may choose to involve your adult children in the planning process, and the right attorney wants to build a relationship with them as well.

An Interdisciplinary Approach

Another trait of the right kind of attorney is true commitment to the team approach to estate planning. A good estate planning attorney recognizes that every member of the planning team (including the investment advisor, the insurance professional and the CPA) is vital to the success of the plan. The right attorney will involve the other advisors in the long-term relationship you have to the degree that you are comfortable with that arrangement.

Legal documents are not enough. Even documents that have been Drafted from in-depth counseling and are custom-designed to meet the unique needs of the client are not enough. Documents are standing alone like the proverbial automobile without fuel. The documents? instructions only apply to assets that are owned properly. For example, a will only controls those things owned in the individual?s name ? not jointly. The trust controls only those things owned by the trustee of the trust. An irrevocable life insurance trust works only if it is properly funded with a suitable insurance policy. Advanced entities require careful balancing of assets for maximum effectiveness. Accurate valuation of your business interests is imperative. New planning tools often require additional accounting and tax advice. Financial and insurance advisors, as well as accountants, Provide the fuel that is needed to help Ensure Appropriate financial assets that are allocated and funded correctly, offer valuations Necessary and tax returns, and Provide the means for proper balance within the plan. The estate planning attorney you work with should not only recognize these truths, but be collegial and cooperative with the other professionals that are providing these things. Each member of the interdisciplinary team provides a cross-check for the other members. If there is disagreement among the professionals on a strategy or its implementation, it can be discussed and worked out between them as a team. After all, estate planning is both an art and a science. In this way, you are served with unanimous agreement among the professionals instead of getting contradicting advice from multiple sources. Mutual respect and clear protocols will Characterize the interdisciplinary team that is working well together. Each team member wants to know exactly what is expected of him or her, and communication with each other and with you will be constant and clear. As mentioned, the right kind of attorney will be focused on a long- term (even multi-generational) relationship you and your family. Therefore, the attorney will not have a transactional approach to the estate plan, but rather a process approach. An estate plan is never really done until the person doing the planning has passed away and every instruction for every beneficiary of every subsequent generation has been Carried out. Those who speak of the plan in the past tense (?They did their estate plan ??) may have a shortsighted perspective. A Strategic Process to Support the Relationships

The client-centered attorney wants Ensure that everything possible is done so that the plan is met Carried to fruition and your expectations are.

There is nothing as constant as change. Your personal, family and financial situations change all the time. Kids get married and have children, down real estate and financial assets change value as the market goes up or;, there are divorces and remarriages a child marries someone you do not approve of, a grandchild gets involved with drugs, you win the lottery , and so on

In addition, laws (both tax and non-tax) change constantly.. First we have an estate tax. Then we?re told the Sun estate tax is not bad. The estate tax is abolished. Oops, the estate tax is back! Assets in retirement accounts and trusts are protected from creditors and predators. But then a court in one state says that some assets may not be protected protected in certain circumstances. There?s no way that a will or a trust Drafted 20 years ago (or even 5 years ago) is current with all of those changes. Sun updating and maintenance of the plan are required in order for it to work.

The other thing that is constantly changing (or should be) is the growth and education of the attorney and advisor working with you on every your plan. Over time, new strategies are developed planning, new tools are discovered, and there are better ways to accomplish a goal. Of course, you want to continue growing as well, and your goals for the plan could change. The right estate planning attorney has systems in place to Ensure he or she stays in touch with you, that the rest of The planning team knows of changes, and that there are methods to adjust the plan in light of those changes. As every member of the planning team Focuses on the needs of the client, the process will run smoothly, and you will be more comfortable with the advice that is given and the decisions you make.
The attorney will also be aware that for a plan to work well, the people who will help in the future need to know what?s going on. If the children will someday serve as trustees and personal representatives, the attorney might be involved in teaching those children what to do. If trusts have been established ongoing to protect those children and grandchildren, the other advisors should be available to continue serving as advisors to the subsequent generations instead of losing that expertise and familiarity. The client-centered interdisciplinary approach can make that happen. Your Role In The Estate Planning Process

Your role in the process is an active role, not a passive one. You should avoid the attorney who is content with simply telling you what to do, and then throwing together some documents to accomplish it. That is the attorney?s schedule ? not yours

In summary, if you?re working with the right estate planning attorney, you should plan on being involved in three distinct steps:

first . Develop a plan with counseling-oriented (rather than document-oriented) professionals.

2nd

You and your family to commit to ongoing maintenance and education program.

3 Assure that your wisdom is passed along with your wealth. As you consider those you love, and those material things that you?ll someday leave behind, only a properly designed and implemented estate plan can Ensure that your goals for those loved ones are accomplished.

Many estate plans in America do not work. They often Consist of fill-in-the-blank documents, delivered in a one-time transaction, and never updated. If that?s all an attorney can offer, that?s not the right attorney for you. Choose an attorney that is counseling-oriented, values-based, and as strong as he or she is on relationships is on the law.

Off the Bench: Ozzie likes to get drunk on road trips

One of my favorite managers in baseball has to be Ozzie Guillen of the Miami Marlins and recently, Ozzie revealed to the world that he doesn?t do much on team road trips.

Ozzie told reporters earlier in the week that he doesn?t like to go out but instead stay in the hotel and get drunk:

?Get drunk and go to sleep.? I?ve got my routine. Game?s over, stay in the lobby of the hotel, the hotel bar, get drunk and go to sleep,? Ozzie said. I get drunk because I?m happy because we won or get drunk because I?m very sad and disturbed because we lose. Same routine. for 25, 28 years. It hasn?t changed. I don?t like to go out.?

When Ozzie asked again if he was kidding in regards to the statement, the Oz-man stuck by his guns:

?No. Why do I have to lie?? he said. ?I never get in trouble. I?m never going to leave the hotel. Nobody can call my wife and say we saw Ozzie in this bar or this place.?

Keep Your Hearing: The Importance of Regular Hearing Screening

Good hearing is something that most of us take for granted. But when you lose the ability to communicate with friends and loved ones, your quality of life can go into steep decline. If you suspect your hearing has deteriorated over the years, or you have suffered a sudden loss of hearing, it?s important to get your hearing tested as soon as possible. Free hearing tests in Orange County are available at your local Miracle-Ear hearing center.

Lisa Smith of Miracle-Ear owns several hearing centers throughout Orange County and has over 28 years experience in the hearing aid business. She has seen hearing aids evolve from analog instruments to the advanced digital and programmable hearing aid devices of today. If you have been neglecting coming in for a hearing test in Orange County for fear of having to wear a hearing aid, Smith says that today?s hearing aids are smaller and more appealing than earlier models. For example, Behind-the Ear hearing aid models allow patients to hear better without having to plug the ear canal. Furthermore, advancements in digital miniaturization have resulted in smaller hearing aids. ?We now have tiny hearing aids that can help people who have substantial hearing loss,? says Smith.

When you visit your local Miracle-Ear hearing center for your free Orange County hearing test, the friendly and knowledgeable staff will take a short medical history and discuss any hearing concerns you may have. ?We discuss exactly what we?re going to be doing,? says Smith. ?We advise the prospective patient that we?re going to take a look in their ears and then ask them some questions.?

The hearing test consists of a physical examination of the ear, a video otoscopy, and a series of hearing tests designed to pinpoint any possible hearing loss. Smith says it?s a good idea to bring along a companion to your hearing test in Orange County. Bringing a companion can be useful during testing, and they can offer moral support to the person being tested.

You don?t have to be hearing impaired to get a hearing test. Regular auditory screening is an important part of your medical record, regardless of whether you have documented hearing loss or not. Smith says that even very young people can benefit from regular testing. Follow-up examinations are also an important part of the Miracle-Ear service protocol. ?Whether they have a hearing loss or not, we invite them back in every year for their annual hearing test,? says Smith.

Learn more about promoting good hearing health and developments in hearing aid technology with a visit to your local Orange County Miracle-Ear hearing center.

Deep science drove discovery of Titanic

Today, anyone with a wad of cash and a sense of adventure can dive to the Titanic's deepsea grave, but behind these tourist jaunts lies a long and daunting tale of scientific endeavour.

After the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, schemes proliferated for salvaging it -- from packing the ship with pingpong balls or using magnets or balloons to bring it to the surface.

But these wildfire schemes ran into the reality of locating the liner in the deep, dark depths of the North Atlantic.

The honours went to French and US researchers whose rigour, perseverance and game-changing technology led them to the grave of the greatest ship of its time.

"You need good tools and a good historical study to know where to search," Jean-Louis Michel, the engineer who was the first to see images of the wreck, told AFP.

Michel was one of a team from the French Research Institute for Exploration of the Sea (Ifremer) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts.

On July 10, 1985, they set out aboard the French research ship Le Suroit on a quest to find the legendary wreck.

"In terms of sonar we had the best in the world and ... the Americans had developed a vehicle with a highly sensitive camera -- the best in the world," he said.

"So by bringing together all these means and by sharing the cost of the research, it seemed possible."

The scientists collated every scrap of evidence they could find: logbooks from ships that had been near the disaster area, witness testimonies, weather and current data and information from searches in 1977, 1980, 1981 and 1983.

They narrowed the search zone to about 400 square kilometres (155 square miles), nearly five times the area of Manhattan.

The team cautiously lowered the new sonar and a magnetometer, a device that picks up magnetic anomalies caused by large metal objects.

Day by day, Le Suroit ploughed backwards and forwards, towing the array at a depth of 15-20 metres (48-65 feet) above the seabed, scanning strips of floor a kilometre (0.6 of a mile) wide.

On August 25, with Le Suroit called to other duties, a WHOI vessel, the Knorr, took over under oceanographer Robert Ballard.

He deployed a remote-controlled, deep-sea vehicle called Argo, fitted with cameras -- a huge and costly innovation at the time.

On September 1, watching the screen aboard the Knorr, Michel became the first person in more than 73 years to see the Titanic.

"The first thing I saw was anomalies on the sea bottom. The structure of the sea bottom was changing," he recalls.

A few metres (yards) later, he spotted a "shining reflection" on the screen -- a sign of something metallic.

As the camera inched forward, "there was more and more metal, and in the metal we recognised some pieces of railing ... it was pieces of ship."

Despite the stunning find, they were not yet sure it was the Titanic.

"Next step, we arrived on big pieces of metal ... and a few metres later we were on the biggest structure, four metres in diameter, eight metres high, in fact it was a boiler and I recognised it" from photos of the Titanic.

Reflecting on that "extraordinary" discovery, Michel said he felt achievement mixed with chilling solemnity.

"All those victims dying in the cold water, I was thinking of that. Because we were exactly there where they died."

The wreck had finally been found, broken in two, 21.2 kilometres (13.2 miles) from the final SOS coordinates transmitted by the Titanic -- an error by its crew that had derailed all previous searches.

Today's sub-surface toolkit includes towed sleds, tethered remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), says the WHOI.

Robots can peer into the ocean depths without the perils of extreme chill and crushing pressure.

Technical progress -- and money -- are helping to satisfy Man's urge to see things for himself.

Last month, James Cameron, director of the movie "Titanic", plunged 11 km (seven miles) to the Mariana Trench, the deepest place in the world, aboard a specially designed submersible.

And British tycoon Richard Branson is building the "Virgin Oceanic," which he intends to take this year to the Atlantic's Puerto Rico Trench.

Cyclist accident makes waves on the Web

The story of a San Francisco cyclist who plowed into a pedestrian on March 29 and then apparently took to a bicycle blog forum to tell his side of the story is blowing up on the Web.

Chris Bucchere allegedly struck 71-year-old Sutchi Hui?who later died?at a busy San Francisco intersection, and then identified himself as the rider in the crash on a public Google?group for the?Mission Cycling Club .

The incident is making waves on the blog-o-sphere as readers weigh in on the cyclist's story. The post, which has since been removed from the forum, read in part, "The light turned yellow as I was approaching the intersection, but I was already way too committed to stop. The light turned red as I was cruising through the middle of the intersection and then, almost instantly, the southern crosswalk on Market and Castro filled up with people coming from both directions, ? so, in a nutshell, blammo."

The rider goes on, "Apparently I hit a 71-year-old male pedestrian and he ended up in the ICU with pretty serious head injuries. I really hope he ends up OK."

Hui died, but the medical examiner's report has not yet been released. In a statement to Yahoo News, the spokeswoman for the San Francisco District Attorney, Stephanie Ong Stillman, noted that the office is keeping an eye on the case, although no charges have been filed. Stillman emphasized, "We take pedestrian traffic fatalities very, very seriously."

Apparently so do many readers of blog forums, who weighed in on Bucchere's alleged actions. One biker wrote on SFist:

"It takes just one (bleeping) jerk like Chris to give a bad name to the countless other bikers whom obey laws and ride safely." Another added, speaking directly to Bucchere, "Your irresponsibility injured (and ultimately killed) a man and you took to the Internet to tell your story? Yeah, you deserve jail time."

Kevin LaKritz, a founder of Mission Cycling Club, learned of the incident through the public post, and told Yahoo News, "It's terrible, our thoughts go out to the family." LaKritz said of the post?, "Everyone was shocked and horrified when they read it. It's not what Mission Cycling is about. It's about creating a community through cycling." He added, "We don't condone reckless riding in any way."

Bicycling is a popular way to get around San Francisco, and while bike accidents that lead to pedestrian fatalities are rare, this is now the second incident to make headlines this year. Recently, 23-year-old Randolph Ang pled guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for running a red light and hitting a 68-year-old pedestrian who also died.

The San Francisco Bay Guardian reports that Bucchere was a member of the mobile app strava.com, which tracks cyclist data and clocked the biker riding 35 miles per hour at the time of the incident.

In a statement on its website, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Executive Director Leah Shahum denounced bad behavior on two wheels or four: "While we recognize that this case is still under investigation, we are deeply troubled by the just-released online account of the incident."

She added,"As advocates working for safer streets, we condemn reckless behavior?whether on a bicycle or in a car. Those who put others in danger should be held accountable for their actions."

Bucchere's Twitter, LinkedIn and website accounts are gone. But the social media trail that's left, if it checks out, won't exactly help Bucchere's case.

Finding Bear Market Stocks That Have Big Profit Potential

Bear Market StocksA common misconception of people that do not understand the stock market is that bear markets are times to sell all stocks and hold only cash to avoid losses from bear market selloffs.? They do not realize that there are bear market stocks that offer opportunities to make money in the stock market during bear markets.? The key to making money on bear market stocks is to understand how to find bear market stocks and to invest in them at the right time.

During bearish stock markets, bear market stocks have historically outperformed the overall stock market and have become a safe haven that many investors use to ride out bear markets.? Bear market stocks include conservative dividend paying stocks, such as utility and consumer staples stocks.? Bear market stocks are essentially the stocks of companies that offer products or services that consumers will continue to buy regardless of the state of the economy.

During an economic recession, consumers make it a priority to pay their utility bills and buy consumer staples, such as basic food items and household consumer goods.? Savvy stock market investors realize this and buy utility and consumer staples stocks. ?This is why utility stocks such as Pacific Gas and Electric (PCG) and Consolidated Edison (ED) and consumer staple stock such as Proctor and Gamble (Symbol: PG) and Colgate-Palmolive (Symbol: CL) typically outperform the broader stock market during bear markets, and are good bear market stocks to invest in.?

When to Invest In Bear Market Stocks

The time to consider investing in bear market stocks is when it is evident that a bear market is occurring and is likely to remain for a number of months due to poor economic conditions.? While stock market investors sweat out a bear market, many savvy investors buy bear market stocks and get paid via dividends to wait for better stock market conditions.? It is important to remember that the stock market will often hit its bottom during the middle of a recession and start moving higher thereafter, even as the recession continues, in anticipation better economic times ahead.? Therefore, the time to sell bear market stocks and invest in bull market stocks is during the middle of a recession, when the economy seems bleak and appears to have hit bottom.

A good way to trade bear market stocks is to make a list of bear market stocks before a bear market occurs.? Identify the bear market stocks that did well in prior bear markets.? While not every bear market is the same, and the performance of companies can and often does vary considerably from one bear market to the next, there may be some excellent bear market stocks buying opportunities that can be identified by looking at the past performance of stocks during prior bear markets.
